I've also seen guys using drop nets (like the ones used for yabbying) although it is harder to manouvre a pumping squid into one of these. I have a very long landing net (4m) that I sometimes take when I go squidding off piers. It works well, but it's very long and cumbersome to carry.
Another thing I've seen is an extendable pole with what looks like a huge jig hook on the end, which is used to free gaff squid.
