Dawso, just seen this post. It depends on your budget and it's a big ask trying to cover all bases. I reckon the best value squidding outfit out there would be a Daiwa Egee 2506 reel ($199.00) matched to a Shimano Sephia BB 800ML ($250.00 landed from PLAT in Japan). Now we are talking $500.00 by the time we put braid on it.
Really before I started specialist squid fishing, I got away with a Shimano Catana 7ft rod ($50.00) and it was matched to one of my bream spinning reels.
For spinning for bonito, as much as I like Daiwa the extra gear ratio of the Shimanos would be better, something like a 2500- 4000 sized Stradic or Sustain.
