The important thing to remember with any lure/jig is this: is it something that is regularly seen and eaten by your target.
People who say Garfish lures are just plain bad are probably using them where garfish are'nt a staple diet of squid. Off course the reverse is true - places with garfish around will probably be better for garfish lures.
Prawn jigs work so well because prawns are common food for saltwater fauna everywhere.
Best bet is, look at what's hanging around your local fishing spot - whether it's potty mullet, prawns or garfish and use an appropriate jig.
