Poles for squid
#1
Can anyone tell me a good place to buy a pole for squid fishing? What features/brands do you look for? What is a reasonable price to pay?

Thank you,

You forgot to mention where your from.

As far as squid poles go there is a brand called Aussie poles about $50 to $60

They are available in most reputable tackle shops

Stay away from the cheap Double Z brands as they break like toothpicks.

Now when you buy them you will have to cut the first 8 inches of the tip

the reason here being is the tip will not handle the weight of a big squid

and is some times to loght to hook squid properly

What I do is cut aprrox 8 inches of the tip and glue a Ferrel rod tip to the end

You know the last ferrel on the end of your rod tip I usally by a couple of medium Ferrels when Im buying new poles

Use nothing but 24 hour aryldyte this is a two part epoxy resin glue and is the perfect thing to glue the rod ferrels with.

Putting the ferrels on also makes putting line and jigs on I use a heavy line

on my poles 15Kg + and use clips at either end of the line One to clips the jig or lure to and the other to clip to the rod ferrel

But be warned all these types of collapsable poles are prone to spliting with age they start to split at the begining of each section . the splitting can be stopped by the use of electrical shrink wrap and can be applied to say the first five inches of every section of the rod( if you take out the plug at the butt off the rod you can slide all the sections out seperately) the shrink wrap dosent jam up the rod when you collapse it down and is great for giving extra strength to these rods buy either white or orange to give your rods more visability at night.

g'day nathan

A squid pole is the same as a course fishing pole they are collapsable an come in different lengths in some circles they are known as ###### poles and they are favoured for catching squid for several reasons

OK, again - i still dont understand - these ones i have seen are 21 foot long - are they a conventional style fishing rod at 21ft or how do they work - do they have a fishing line and you have to attatch a jag??

Thanks

Actually a "ferrule" is the name for the join between two rod parts,

either metal (often chrome-plated brass) of glass to glass.

The tip that you are referring to is called a tip or a tip top,

it is a special runner that goes on the very tip of the rod.

It isn't necessary to use 24-hour epoxy for it either, both surfaces

you are glueing are non-porous and the additional strength of the

24-hour over the 5-minute is not needed for this application.

The other "feral" is the domestic gone wild variety, as in cats.
