Newport - Where Do The Newport Squid Migrate To? And When?

Hi everyone,



I was asked recently where exactly do the squid in the newport area go after the come into the newport area.



I had the impression that they moved further into the bay. You will see the document referred to below on page 24 has the following graph. It suggests the squid move progressively up into the "upper bay" which basically includes the areas around Colt State Park, Bristol Narrows, Bristol Ferry Landing, Stone Bridge Tiverton, and QP/D Allen Harbor.

Hello Mikect. I was the one who e-mailed Glen and asked the question. I read the assesment and it appears the squid are hear all summer. the numbers are high in August. I wonder why I didn't hear anything about the information reported form other squidders. Maybe it is a secret?

In the old days when you could fish at the URI dock we would sometimes accidently snag some squid. They were all very small in size. I believe the female squid come to the Newport area to lay eggs. Those small squid may be baby squid that stay in the relative safety of the bay during the summer before heading out into the ocean.

I'm positive that the squid would migrate back to offshore. They are deep sea creatures which only come to the shallows to lay their eggs. Reason being is that the shallow provide an abundant amount of food for the hatchlings to forage on and then by fall time the hatchlings are eating size! Then it's time for them for migrate offshore for the winter only to return back in the spring to lay their eggs. I guess it's cyclical eh?

*note* notice how spring squids are larger than ones in the fall. My theory maybe incorrect but it's just my 2 cents.

Missed the other part of the question which is "when?"



They should be gone in about 2-3 weeks.

Based on the data glen provided what you say makes sense. Thanks for the information. I haven't been squidding in a week, but a friend of mine stayed at the Hyatt this past weekend and said there were several people squidding. They each had several in their buckets.

That's what happens with Japanese squid so I would say you're on the money.



Water temps play a big part. The area south of me gets eddies (sp?) from the deep sea currents and you can get 500g squid in February there. Early this month friends were getting up to 2kilo ones.
