2019 Rhode Island Squid Report
#61
Going to Newport tonight.  Wish the temp would hit 50.  Now its 48.7   Hoping to do better

than last week.  Should be a nice night weather wise.  Hungry squid were they fishing right off

the beaches.  What depth was bottom where they were fishing. Maybe when the bigger stripers move

in it will chase the squid in to spawn.

Yea the boat was very close to shore probably no more than half mile off in water. Its south side of the Galilee harbor at a location right out of Matunuck point. I think its probably 15 to 20 feet water, pretty shallow. There were several small boats fishing out there at night

Do you know if they are catching them in the harbor at Galilee?

Good eye.  The first two anchor points were .6 miles from shore, but in 30-35 feet.  It looks like they drifted after that in shallower water.

As for squid inside the harbor of refuge, or in point judith pond, I've never seen it but old timers say they used to get them over by the commercial docks.  I'd love it if I could fish off the back of my boat in the marina.  I'd never have a down day.  Wink

It's killing me sitting at the dock.  But I'm still waiting on parts to come back from the part doctors.  Sigh.

At least they are in and relatively easy to find.

The spring before last, we did well right off the commercial docks. Camped at Fisherman's Memorial for four nights. The two of us caught exactly 25 each night from dark until 11. In addition, we also caught 25 in the middle of one day. Weird getting the exact same number each session. Last year, we tried a few times w/o success.

Galilee docks not really seeing squid yet. But they are in close. Water temp probably slowed things up a bit after it looked like an early start several weeks ago. The weather was cold for this time of the year for several weeks. Water temps started dropping again. But things are looking up with a warmer forecast and the squid close to the beaches. More should be in the bay any day now! Some have been caught in the bay but not the blitz that we All hope for on a good year!

Went to Newport yesterday, arrived at 7:30pm  set up and caught 3 smaller squid. At 8pm a 10-12 lb striper

came by and that killed squidding for about 1/2 hr.  Got light set up and around 8pm started catching again.

Was sorta steady and around 9pm had squid up in the light chasing small minows. Some would hit but

mostly others ignored the jig.  Around 10 pm a bunch of bluefish around 5-7 lbs came in and attacked the

squid I was pulling up.  Managed to get before the bluefish did.  That put a stop to squid catching.  Around

10:30 it picked up again and then at 11pm a 10-15 lb striper showed in the light and that killed that spurt of

action.  Only got one more after that till 12 midnight when I left..  Hardly anyone there.  I ended up with

48 for the night mixed sizes.  Did see 1" to 3" baby squid in the light a few times.  Wasn't lights out action

but at least it was worth the trip for me.  One more trip in the future and I should be OK for the season.

Went to GI this morning. Bridge parking was blocked off for construction at the entrance. Dump truck unloaded heavy construction equipment and stayed there with cones blocking the entrance. You could back into a few spots down by the bridge if it remains that way parking will be very limited. No squid in two hours. Ink from last night was visible in several spots on the bridge Better than a few days ago, no daytime squid yet.

Tonight at GI from 7-10:15. Over 100 people very few squid. A few lights had bait under them most did not. I saw one bucket with 5. Most had one or none. A couple more days of warm temps may get things going. Many boats off the beaches tonight. Good catches last night on the boats. Will try again and report in a couple of days.

Went last night. Water was very dirty and wind was blowing. Very slow fished from 7:30 to 11pm. By the time I left I ended up with 21. Wind made it tough. Had no squid in the light all night everything came deep near the bottom.
