Newport Ri 2015 Squid Season

I've been to Lucky bait shop 1 week ago and they have a whole rack of jigs that slides on rails.  Pretty impressive!  Dave at Ocean State Tackle in providence have newer selection and varieties.  The ones I want are the warm jacket, but they are $17 each.  He has a deal though, buy 3 and get $3.00 off or something like that.  But definitely worth it, sucks if you get stuck and lose it though.  

 

I've had many success with smallest size yamashita pink glow in the dark.  I've caught all squid sizes with this little jig.  Going to try the white chin this weekend.  Hope they are in.

don't buy warm jacket model.

I already tried 2years ago, wasn't good.

I bought it from samurai tackle in Japan.

 Bruce, Yamashita makes warm jackets in many different models and sizes. I do not know what model and size wasn't working for you, but I used the Naory RH warm jackets in size 1.8B last fall and they were super deadly. If you use the smaller sizes like 1.5 or 1.8 you need to use very thin line like 4 or 6 pound test or the jigs don't get a good action while jigging. These jigs also come in size1.8D but those sink much more quickly and did not seem to catch as well as the 1.8B model. They will not sink with a really good action if you use 12 pound test or larger. My buddy and I did not get squids on the Naory warm jackets on some nights last fall because there were no squids around on those nights, but we got around 2,000 squids when they came in. We had some impressive daytime squiddin too last fall, all with the same warm jaclet Naorys. The original Naory Range Hunters did not have the warm jacket and they work really well, but the warm jacket Naorys only came out here last year and I assure everybody that they are super squid killers if used on very light line. sizes like 2.0 or 2.5 they don't work at all or it's very heavy?

 

 One problem with jigs is that the size description is not a universal standard. This means that a size 2.5 or 3.5 from different companies will not be anywhere near the same size or sinking rate. Sinking rate has a lot to do with the action of the jig as it is jigged, and is a very imprtant consideration in choosing the optimum jig for your style of jigging. Martinetti changed the weight on some of their prawn jigs several years back and the newer ones with the string in the front are too light and do not have as good an action as the previous ones, and if you hold an old model next to a newer model one can see the lead weight is not as big (thick) on the newer ones. I take a soldering iron and add some lead solder to the newer ones, and I also remove the string and install tiny stainless screw eyes to both the old and new versions and get a better action. Now I use mostly the Naorys which have fantastic action with no modifications. The larger jigs will work when the squid are hungry or aggressive, but I find that the smaller 1.5-2.0 jigs work the best for me and my fishing buddues all the time. As I have stated several times it is important to use very thin line (I use four pound) and light sensitive rods when working the smaller jigs as they just don't get as good an action with heavier line and less sensitive rods. The Naory jigs come in three different sinking rates for every size they make and the slower sinking rate ones need thinner line to function at the optimum efficiency.

I've got aurie-q warm jacket model 1.8 size.

Obviously I really didn't have to buy yamashita jig last year.

I run some test last 3years with a lot of different manufacturers.

It certainly wasn't work for me most of them but I can able to dial my technique.

However, I was able to caught more than 5000 squid by myself.

There is no room for big freezer lol

Hopefully I can do same thing this year

Went out on the 18th for Taug in Tiverton, "NONE", but the weather was gorgeous.  There were 4 kayak out in the middle, but they we not catching anything.  Didn't see any herring or report of herring from the kayaks.  

 

Later on the day, a friendly angler that went for squid earlier says he didn't catch any at "GI".  He was the only one there, no sign of ink.  Hopefully something comes in this weekend.

 

Bruce - if you are having a freezer problem, you can put them in my freezer.  = )

Gilligan - thanks for the info.  I have always been using line 8 - 10, and will start to use size 4 this season.  Do you prefer mono over braided?  And what line color?  i've been using green for mono or braided.

 Hi OneEye, I used clear mono, but have switched to four pound flourocarbon, six will do. Squid see very well and braid although thin is very visible. This doesn't matter when they are thick and aggressive, but you will get more when they're finicky with less visible line. The small Martinettis and the little Naory 1.5B and 1.8B have better action on the thin line too. Flourocarbon line is virtually invisible in the water. It has been popular for years as leader material and it is only recently that it has become available as running line in small sizes but many tackle shops now carry it and it is available online.

I've been using mono most of time but I will give a shot to flourcarbon line.

Only problem with flourcarbon line is they are brittle.

Hopefully I don't snapped my line with jigs.

Buce, there is a new generation of flourocarbon line that is soft and supple and not brittle like the older flourocarbon leader material. It has only been out a year or so. The new Trilene six pound test flourocarbon has a .010" diameter and is quite supple and strong. There is also flourocarbon coated mono now available which is less visible in the water than regular mono.

Gilligan, which Trilene Fluoro are you referring to?  I see the Ice and XLTM in 6 pound.  Big price diff though (the XLTM is about 2x the ice).

This is the Trilene I got online. If you look online there are a lot of flourocarbon lines by a lot of different companies available now. This is all pretty new stuff, made for running line, not leader material as flourocarbon has been before.

It's been a while

I'm at the GI now but there is no sign of squid, nor bait fish.

I set up my light running for about 30min but I still can't see any sign of life yet.

It could be false reports.

New member.great site.im down in Bristol.water temp is 48.no signs of squid yet.been out twice.once Sunday and again on Tuesday night.both times I've wet the line with no luck.plenty of grass shrimp around but that's it.hope to see some soon.

Usually don't c squid here in Bristol about a week after there caught in Newport and little Compton.has anyone been to sakonnet point?I've caught them there real early in the season in years past

State Street in Bristol?  Sounds like a false report.  However, that is a boat launch area so they may have caught them way out.  

 

Might be awhile since the water temp is moving up slowly thanks to our nice 30 - 50s air temp.  

 

My friends went out yesterday, skipped work I think and trying persuade me -- but I rejected their offer, and didn't catch any Taug or see any herring run.  They were excited to go because they heard report that someone caught them at Newport.
