Fished the causeway bridge between 8:30 and 10:30 Saturday night. Maybe 15 or so people there. Breeezy and cool. Caught first squid of season, so I can confirm they are in. Not many, but season has definitely started. Saw about a half dozen cross the rail. Shouldl only get better from here in! Lots of bait gathering in the lights as reported by others.

Thanks for the post letting us know they are in.

I am coming from CT, and it is nice to have confirmed catch information, before coming up to get skunked.

greetings and salutations, I was wondering if it would be a good idea for me to take my 19 foot wellcraft and drop anchor near the bridge, so I can use my generator and submersible lights. Does anyone have a reason I should not launch in GI?

thanks

It is the exact same one as was posted a couple weeks ago, letter for letter, the last one works.

It has some cool Infrared satellite images of the Atlantic, showing the surface temperature readings.

There are always a few boats each year trying their luck near the causeway bridge. Not sure they do much better than the shore guys. However, if your using a boat, the hot spot seems to be under the Newport (Pell) Bridge, on the Newport side. A number of guys in small boats work this area successfully. When the season is in full swing, you'll se a half dozen boats here. If you're going to fish the causeway bridge, stand off enough so as to not bother the shore/bridge fishermen.

Not sure where you plan to launch, but there is a good DEM ramp at Fort Adams which I think is open all night, but you best check. Just a short crossing of Newport Harbor and you're at Goat Island.

That's not a guarantee of not "skunked" cause it's fishing....But at least we are sure that squid is there so we are not wasting our gas money to get there before the squid did, so I am coming too....

Question on saltwater fishing license? do we need to have one for squid fishing? did anyone see RI DEM check for license there? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

You need one for all types of recreational fishing. (basically if you have a line in the water) Although I have spoke with a few DEM agents and there calling this year a "educational transistion year"..So you will probably not get fined if they checked. However, you can go oniline and signup/ print out the Fed one and it will cover RI/MA for this year at no cost. Take you 5 mins topps.

You do not need a license to catch squid. The complete RI fisheries regulations are posted at the RIDEM website but I read that they do not consider this "fishing" per the license requirements.

You're ab solutely correct. I copied this directly from the RI DEM website:

"Anyone who is recreationally fishing for shellfish, lobsters, crabs, or squid, does not need a recreational fishing license (or a federal registration). However, a separate RI recreational lobster license is needed to take lobsters, and for non-residents, a separate recreational shellfish license is needed to take shellfish. Additionally, non-residents may not harvest blue crabs. "

I stand corrected, just read the very bottom were it excludes fishing for squid, yet counterdicts itself above when it says Angling(defined as any use of a hook and line). Oh, Well....Good news for seasonal squidders I suppose.
