Hi Glen, the usual grass whiting, some large black and white striped fish. Definitely saw a few schools of trevaley, and I am pretty sure I saw a rockling as well. And of course big clouds of bait fish. A fair bit could not ID though.
There were a few surface bust ups about 100m off the end of the pier at times as well.
We also saw quite a few small squid just sitting outside of strike range to the bait fish. A quick swap to a 1.5 red yamishita landed 2 but I released them as they were pretty small and we were doing ok anyway.
Each time I was trying to get a line in for some fish, my mate landed a squid, and I was on net duty, awsome but frustrating at the same time.

eg: Time,tide, weather conditions etc?
I am thinking of taking my daughters out soon, I think they'll have a ball.

Glen, I thought about having a look at Flinders this past week but the conditions you describe are what I feared. Too bad there was nothing around to balance out the bad weather with some good catches.
Kraken, Flinders has become my preferred spot of late, usually pretty sheltered unless a southerly is blowing, 'usually' squid to be caught. Infact I have never come home without at least 1 or two on the worst days but Glen's report proves that it does not always produce.
I much prefer mornings, just prior to first light, on the pier, rigged and squidding bout 30 min before first light. I have always found the conditions best (less wind) in the morn, and you have the added bouns of fishing till 10am or whatever and still have the full day to do other things. it also does not get hit (in my opinion) as hard as the other side of bay, Portsea, Blarigowrie etc.
I had an awsome session recently on the run out tide but I have also had some good days at high tide and slack water too. So any time is a good time in my opinion.
Oh, you will need a drop net as it is a fair drop from the pier to the water usually.

Has anyone ever just fished for squid/fish from the beach at flinders.
I went to the beach there a couple of months ago and i saw fish (looked like whiting) swimming around maybe a casting distance from the beach. then i wondered, just before it go really weedy, could i throw in a jig in amongst it and try for squid? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

They were around the 3 feet mark. Another guy managed to hook one up with his squid jig somehow!

I am thinking about a flick at flinders over the long weekend some time. But checking the Beaureau of Meteorology website today it looks like Monday and Tuesday could have 40-50kph winds. Which might be sub-optimal really.

Light winds that night and a little chilly. Tends to get windy but I've never come home from Flinders empty handed.

Bout what I thought. Thanks for the reply. I think I might go on the Tuesday (RDO) as the long week end might be a bit busy. But I dont mind if there are other squidders/fishers, at least you have some one to ask for help when you might need it.
xALmoN, Type in Flinders pier into google, browse to maps, and you will find directions. I dont know billfisher tackle but from Rosebud it is about 20-30 minutes on the other side of the peninsula. It is near Hastings. An awsome long pier with weed every where. I have seen squid pulled in on both sides from the shallows to the end, high and low tide, night and day sessions. All in all as Clem said it is usually fairly productive.
