Newport Ri 2010 Squid Season
#61
Theres no real answer to that. The run could start in Apr (mid/late) to early May. Keep checking the thread. Talk to the fellow squidfish members. And more importantly, PUT THE TIME IN, especially with squid.

With that said, generally speaking...Late Apr & pretty much all of May.

I wouldnt waste my time trying in Mar.

Howdy!

Squid season starts with the full moon closest to the end of April or early May.
Hello everybody, i've been reading this blog for about 2 years and i just desided to join. it seems like everybody has been squiding for a while now, me on the other hand been squiding for about 3 years and i enjoy it very much. i have a question if anybody can answer me. and sorry if i am missguided. but when does squid season really starts? i read that it starts march 1st but people have also been telling me it doesnt start untill april! So anybody knows whats the deal?
well the thing is, noone can accurately predict it. However I have been reading the past water temperatures of Newport and comparing them to this year. Also the rate at which the temperature is increasing. The squid should arrive around april 15th-may 15th

Any word on how the current water quality is going to affect the squidding this year? Apparently there was a serious failure in the wastewater treatment plants and tons of ######, oil garbage have infiltrated the bay.

SOB right before they are coming in.

I am wondering if there are other good places besides the bay to catch squid.

I eat them and don't need to eat polluted calamari.

Awesome day, not a cloud! Took a ride down to Newport this afternoon. Saw a few trying with no luck. Went by GI, and apparently they are fixing/repairing the bridge. Half the causeway parking area is blocked off. Should be interesting finding a free parking spot this season.

I was thinking the same thing the other day. If not only squid, eating tainted fish like Taug. I will probably spend most of my time fishing open-ocean side. A few other places that come to mind for squid/fish, would be around Sakonnet Point, and if you want to make the trip I have heard of squid being nailed at Woods Hole this past year.

Tatonka, hope all has been well with you this summer and winter. Also, hope the fall bass season was as good to you as the spring. Mine was... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':rod:' />

I was just out at GI rock wall from 10-10:30p with a light on, saw plenty of baitfish swimming under the light, didn't see any squid. Typically when squids are around, the baitfish would get into formation and swim away as a group, I didn't see that happen, they were scattered all over under the light. The water temperature listed by NOAA was at 50.5f degrees, anyway just an update, will keep you posted.

We had about an inch and a half in our basement in North Branford CT. It's still drying out.

I'm in North Branford and got no water, thanks to my somewhat new sump pump. The old one quit in the last big storm and gave me 3 inches to clean up.

My friend that lives in New London had about a foot of water and we spent all day Easter Sunday pulling out the rest of the wet crap from the basement.

Just read that Rhodie finally got a clue and lowered the fluke regs this year. 19.5" 6 fish bag limit and season starts earlier too. YES!!!!!!

Even more motivation to fill a freezer with squids to use for bait!

Water temps at Newport have been above 50 degs for a few days now and the full moon is coming 4/28. My guess is the first strong reports will come in around the weekend before the full moon. If I'm lucky I'll be the one reporting! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

from last years thread:

Someone clamed that they caught. They caught by unusual means, not snagging or jig. So it is first squid at April 27. According to the table the flukeprodigy won. Man I will have to save you some squid jigs next time I go diving. Congrads!

Water temp last night was 47.5 by my thermometer at the causeway. Still too cold. FYI my reading are usually 2.5 degrees less then the internet posting from the base. Personally I am looking at that magic 51.
