Newport Ri 2010 Squid Season
#1
Are we going to fill the freezer this year? I am finding generators on craigslist, coming up with catching technologies and thinking about getting that t-shirt idea off the ground (finally) Looking forward to the cherry blossoms to tell us it's time. Cheers!

As far as I know, reports from the shops that we sell to, as well as the MA, RI, NY, NJ fishermen that we sell to. I believe we sell the hottest jig available.

Great to see the 2010 site open! First sign of spring (that and the equipment truck leaving Fenway Park!)

Just to help keep things clear, saltwater fishing licenses will be $7 for RI residents and $10 for non-residents this year. However, it looks like this year the state will also accept federal registration which is FREE for this year. Go to https://www.countmyfish.noaa.gov/register/ to sign up. They send you a registration card in the mail.

I checked the RI DEM web site and didn't see an option for a saltwater license yet. I'm not sure they will get their act together in time for squid season, but you never know. The RI license will give you reciprocity in other states and the money goes to improving RI marine recreational fisheries. Ten bucks well spent.

Here's the part about licenses:

20-2.2-4. License required.

(a) It shall be unlawful for any person to fish recreationally in the marine waters of Rhode Island without:

(1) A recreational fishing license issued in accordance with the provisions of this chapter; or

(2) A recreational fishing license or registration issued by any other exempted state that affords reciprocity to Rhode Island residents who hold recreational fishing licenses issued pursuant to this chapter; or

(3) A federal saltwater angler registration issued by the national marine fisheries service.

And just so you know:

20-2.2-8. Violations.

(a) Any person who violates any provision of this chapter shall be guilty of a civil violation and subject to a fine as follows:

(1) For a first offense, a fine of ten dollars ($10.00);

(2) For a second offense, a fine of fifty dollars ($50.00); and

(3) For a third or subseqent offense, a fine of one hundred dollars ($100).

And, it's free in 2010 from the feds. It counts in RI this year. You can get registered here:

Thanks for the info guys, I just registered through the feds.

IMO, I still think the license is BS. Public access should be a right.

Agreed, but in all fairness, we can't blame the state this time. Registration/licensing is a federal mandate, so you have to take it up with Reed/Whitehouse/Langevin/Kennedy. We're trying to make the best of a no-win situation. As it is, we've got pretty much the cheapest saltwater license program there is at $7.00. Next year the federal registry is NOT free, so we'd be looking at $20 or more with the money going into the federal treasury and the state still being responsible for enforcement. Just ridiculous!

One final polint. The state law was banged out with a lot of hard work from the good people at RISAA. It's a great organization that's looking out for the best interests of all saltwater fishermen in RI and well worth supporting. Nuff said. Waiting to see the fluke regs for 2010 next. Squid on!
