After yet another freezing subzero Canberra night, it was great to head to the coast for a balmy predicted top temperature of 15 degrees. I launched the kayak at Maloneyâs Beach near Bateman's bay at about 8am and drifted around in search of squid. A few friends and I launched our kayaks at around 1pm in glorious sunny conditions with light winds. We had been fishing hard in the Clyde river in the morning, and had nothing to show for our efforts. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> We had only been fishing for half an hour when a nasty southerly sprung up out of nowhere. I persisted for a couple more hours in the choppy swell and managed 6 nice squid on Yamashita 1.8 and 2.0 jigs, a brown shrimphunter and an Egi Lee Frocky, lost a few as well. Ahoy squidders, I bought some new toys from Motackle.com (Daiwa Emeraldas rattling squid jigs), and christened them out in the kayak near Bateman's Bay on Saturday with 5 nice squid, including one real monster! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> It has never happened to me before, but the big one took me into the reef! I was only in about 1 metre of water so I paddled over and saw my line going into a cave with ink coming out of it <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> After getting the angle right I was able to extract the beast.

I put in another few hours squidding from the kayak at Spot x on Saturday, and managed 4 nice ones casting tiny jigs around in the shallows from 1-2m deep. It rained almost constantly, and there was an annoying wind which made life a bit miserable, but it's never too miserable when you're catching a couple <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I have been fishing the fresh almost exclusively for the past couple of months, so a trip to the coast was on the cards for Saturday. After spending most of the day flogging a shut-down estuary for not much return, I hit up Squiddly spot X for a quick session before heading home. I found a good patch and bagged 16 in an hour, some were really good sized. Lots of times the hooked squid were followed in by one or more others, a few times I was able to catch the followers by unhooking the landed squid and then quickly dumping the jig back in the water (without even casting). The kayak now needs a good scrubbing! My favorite chewed up brown shrimp hunter, a newer pink shrimp hunter premium, and a tiny pink emeraldas jig did the damage.
Nice catch Jazman, when I go ,if I'm alone I take a second rod rigged & ready (usually with a diff. pattern shape or colour) and just leave it hang nr. the surface.Followers almost always take it as I pull there mate out !
Bent rod, it is a bit unsteady your first few trips fishing in the kayak, but it soon become second nature. My kayak is quite wide so it is comfortable. The only thing that can be a bit awkward is reaching around behind you to retrieve rods and tackle. I usually drift while squid fishing so I can cover more ground, then when I find a patch of squid I paddle back and drift over that spot.
Kingy, that is a good tip! I will try having a jig out next to the kayak next trip. I always have at least two jigs out, but my second one was under a float a fair way away.
