Newport, Ri - 2008 Squid Season
I went out on the Frances fleet last night, (sat) another great squid trip. I filled my cooler to within 2" from the top. There were dad's, alone with their sons fishin in awe at the massive schools of tubes that just kept going around the boat all night. I seen at least 6 to 8 fluke come over the rail, not sure if any were keepers. I wish the boy at the back didn't loose his fluke at the side of the boat. Mate said it looked about 4 -5 lbs. It was so close to being in the net. I think I will return for tonight's trip, seening it may be the last one of the year. They just can't seem to get anyone interested in reserving spots on the trips. If you are interested in Sun night's trip, I highly suggest calling and reserving or letting them know you are comming. If you go on the trip, look for me and I'll tell you my technique on how I filled my cooler. I'l be the one with eyes half open. I'm hooked.

this is from the francesfleet...

A fluke estimated at 6lbs was lost at the surface when the squid jig it went after shook free.

Always hyping up reports to get people on board <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

My bad, I was told it 5 - 6 lbs. and I'm not with the fleet. I have no reason to hype the boat. I thought 1st hand honest info was what this forum was for. I'll be there tonight and so will somerville squid.
any more news on the GI?
No news on the squid front from me but we have been turning those squid into fluke. 1 squid = 4-5 fluke. Pretty good, We've also been taking good bass out at the head and the fluke on lucas. Also been up in N bay catching descent bass on Porgy's. Probably going to start exploring L. Comp, and BI see ya out there, Eatfish
what the hell, that's 2 posts that got deleted now!?????????????/

How you rig up the squid for fluke? whole squid or strip? did you use those small ones? I'm thinking putting 2 hooks rig on those small ones to see whether it'll attract bigger fluke. Got some 18 or 19 inch on Spro with squid strip.

Hey Johnat,

Did go out last friday night. Although small, I did manage a 1/4 bucket.

Cheers,

Owner makes something called the Boa rig which is an adjustable two hook rig for throwing whole squid. Problem is in order to get one with thick enough leader material, you have to buy the ones w/ 6/0 7/0 hooks which are too big. My advice would be to learn how to tie your own snood rig with 40lb fluro. Don't waste your time throwing small squid either. Go big or go home. If you want consistent doormats, you've gotta throw big baits.

Here's a link that Bob (snaildarter) posted earlier in this thread

Three way with a spro jig on one tag and a fluke rig on the other tag, squid strips on both. But, I'm still a rookie, allways will be, Tatonka and Pearldiver seem to know their stuff, Go big or go home!! Like it but, when I'm trying to fill the cooler or I have kids with me, lets get them catching, Livelining porgy's upper Nar. Bay 3 Keeper Bass, all 32-33", Released healthy to fight another day. Headed to BI this weekend will post a report.
Hey,

Just alittle info about stipped bass around colt state park. I caught a 40 inch 22lber last weekend. This fish was a great fight, caught on whole (dead) pogy. Tried using live pogy' but blue destroyed them all.

How is squid fishing at GI, is this still going on
Hi

Is squid season over in Newport? Is anyone still going to GI and catching anything?

Also, is Frances Fleet still doing any squid trips????

I think your too late. Francis fleet is done, took a ride past GI last night on my boat, nobody there. There's a small run in the fall but based on the spring its going to be very small. There is still some squid around but you have to look pretty hard and burn a lot of fuel.

Report:

The Block was a bust for me last weekend, no bass, got caught in a pretty good thunderstorm around 3am, some blues, skate, no Fluke. Fished near the Francis a little, saw them pull up some of the smallest Fluke I've ver seen. Tried it again last night around Npt and Jmstn. Nothing, 1 Blue, Anybody want to give up some fluke spots?

That fluke trip on the Hellen H is good. I went on it last year, got a bunch of doormats, This year I have my own boat going to give it a shot next week. Going to try the same area that we went to on the hellen H last year
