Mt Martha, VIC - glen - 17-02-2004 i went last week. i mainly went snorkelling so didn't fish. there was heaps of small fish. They looked a little bit like a whiting but not sure what they were. There was 1000's of them! It was pretty cool. I also saw 4 tiny squid in a school. No garfish around. Only saw 1 or 2 leatherjackets. Saw a few parrot fish. It wasn't worth fishing I think. Mt Martha, VIC - adam - 17-02-2004 that good to hear.. they were probably small whiting or maby mullet.. have you ever taken the spear out snorkeling off mt martha and given spearfishing a go? im defently gonna give it a go off mt martha as it seems like a top spot.. adam Mt Martha, VIC - glen - 18-02-2004 i was planning on doing this but i only went out once so far. I bought the cluster spear head to attach to my old hand-me-down spear gun. But i didn't get near anything. I had a pot shot at some garfish but they just seemed to get out of the way of the spear! maybe the rubbers need replacing. they are pretty old. like maybe 20 years old. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Mt Martha, VIC - glen - 19-02-2004 These are some of the fish I saw at Mt Martha while snorkelling Anyone know what they are? They were quite small but there was 1000's of them. Cheers, Glen Mt Martha, VIC - Jazman - 19-02-2004 Yo Glen I'm 95% sure they are juvenile shortfinned pike. I caught one while trolling off Philip Island last weekend (about 35cm) but they grow to at least 50cm I think. Good to eat as well. Cheers Jaz <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Mt Martha, VIC - Jazman - 19-02-2004 Oops, I was wrong <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> They are actually LONGFINNED pike, shortfinned pike are a.k.a. snook, much longer, more slender body. Here is a pic I found: Mt Martha, VIC - Jazman - 19-02-2004 And here's another one: Mt Martha, VIC - glen - 20-02-2004 great thanks jaz. i have never seen these before. now i have to wait till they grow a bit bigger <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Mt Martha, VIC - glen - 19-07-2004 tried mt martha on sunday. no squid to be seen. got a few parrot fish (wrasse) which i threw back.... and 1 leatherjacket which i kept. the water was quite dirty. i guess the recent wind has stirred things up a bit. better luck next time perhaps! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> Mt Martha, VIC - supersquid - 18-08-2004 Mt Martha Rocks /Mt Martha Victoria/ Mornington Pennisula Along The Esplande in Mt Martha are several rock ledges that can be fished and it is here that some thumper squid can be caught just drive along the road and you will see cars parked along the beach side of the road. There are dirt and rocky tracks that lead down to the water some are easy to access but others are slightly more difficult and require great care when climbing down to the waters edge. boats also frequent this area in search of squid and unlike the peir produces thumpers some of which have hit the five kilo mark in recent years. Hot summer afternoons seems to bring the big ones on in this area and baited jigs under a float is the way to go here , I have not had much luck in this area with lures either under float or spinning the baited jigs have always produced the goods for me in this area. Garfish are to be found in huge numbers in this area in the summer as are whiting and leatherjackets. Mt Martha, VIC - glen - 06-09-2004 i went to mt martha on sunday. the fishing was pretty bad really! we eventually got 2 small squid on dark but it was disappointing considering we were there for half a day. also caught 2 small parrot fish. cheers, glen Mt Martha, VIC - Guest - 05-11-2004 g'day Glen I live in Mt MArtha and are not happy at all that you are fishing all my squid up! I go down to the pillars often, its a quick walk or ride down the mountain (ride 30 seconds)... Do you have any pictures of the Pillars? If you don't know what the pillars are, they're the diving rocks at the End of Marguerita... its really fun! PPS, the water is COLD!! SHRINKAGE. I got a infected ear + very bad cough (anitbiotics) last time i went swimming (2 weeks ago), so i'm keeping my strength up for summer! Where do you live? Mt Martha, VIC - glen - 06-11-2004 hi there, not sure where the pillars are. a photo would be good. i often go fishing near the bus stop or just past the quary. though the last few trips have been disappointing. should get better as things warm up. i am keen to do some more snorkelling too. cheers, glen Mt Martha, VIC - Guest - 14-11-2004 <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' /> Here you go, this is a slide from my powerpoint! It's very popular in summer - i can't believe you haven't heard about it. I've seen several sting&mantarays - they're bloody scary!!!!! A guy came out and shot it (spear gun) and it whipped him Mt Martha, VIC - Guest - 12-01-2005 Hi Glen, with your squidding using a jig suspended under a float, approx what distance do u have your jig sitting under the surface of the water ? I guess it will all depend on how deep or shallow the area is but generally what length do u use ? Cheers Matt. Mt Martha, VIC - glen - 12-01-2005 hi matt, usually the jig is a bit over a metre deep. i guess deeper might be better but i hate losing jigs on snags! best of luck <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> Mt Martha, VIC - glen - 04-07-2005 I went to Mt Martha on sunday night. Only got a few leatherjackets. No garfish around. It was a little rougher than I normally fish it. On evening we caught the "leg" of a squid but the rest of the squid must still be in the water! Also had one other on which we lost. I think they were fairly small. Afterwards stopped at Mornington but only saw one squid caught. Didn't see any squid following the jigs at all.
