Squidding in Olympia (MA 13)
#1
I have never been squidding before, but have been doing my research. We have a large boat and would like to try squidding from the boat with lights. We are from Olympia and I was wondering if there is a good spot closer to home than Tacoma. I have read many differing opinions about muddy vs. clear water, depths, tackle ect. I think I will try light gear, stay off the bottom, and use lights. Fish & Wildlifes site says most of our local water is good for squid, but I don't put too much weight on that. Can anyone give me an idea where to start, and how much water to try? Our boat draws 4 1/2 feet of water, how shallow should we anchor? Any info is greatly appreciated!

I can't really answer your questions about market squid fishing in Puget Sound, but I wanted to inquire about possibilities for Humboldt squid fisihing when they are around. I have a reserarch lab at Stanford University that is doing work off CA and in the Gulf of CA, but we would like to expand our efforts to the Pacific Northwest. We've done some tag deployments off Westport, WA last year and would like to do that again (or somewhere further north ideally) next year, probably in late summer or early fall when Humboldt squid should be in that area. Your boat sounds like it might be large enough to undertake a squid-tagging trip like this. Let me know if you have any interest in this type of activity -- and also what you learn about market squid fishing.
