Rose Bay

I bought some squid jigging gear this afternoon and then spent a couple of hours net surfing to see how it was done having never tried it before. I found this site and a few others to get me on my way. After setting up with a ridiculously expensive japanese jig I decided to give it a few casts just to test it out my new rod. I picked a spot along New South Head Road between Lyne Park and the Pier Restaurant based purely on convenience. I really didn't expect to catch anything. It was dark with an onshore breeze. I have no idea of the condition of the bottom, presence of weed etc. Anyway, the second cast produced a nice squid. I didn't continue because I didn't have anything to put the squid into and also hadn't renewed my fishing licence. I am totally hooked. I think I like this better than fishing.

G'day Pete! Welcome to squidfish! Glad you found us.

That is great work catching on your first shot! You must be a natural! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Hey Pete

Well done first time round, what colour jig did you buy? I tend to find the natural coloured jigs work best however it depends on the conditions and time of day.

I usually head up a bit further north to Watsons Bay and up near Lady Bay Beach, all along that stretch you can catch some good squid but it is a whole lot easier fishing from a boat.

Good luck and have some fun, try some night squidding as well in high light parts of the harbour, but with bright, fluro coloured jigs.

The jig was a pink and green yozuri #3. I will give it a try up at Watson's Bay this weekend if the weather improves. I wish I had a boat in the harbour. I tried along Rose Bay between Point Piper and the Ferry jetty last week but it seems that my first go was beginner's luck.
