Egi Reel Problem
#1
Gidday everyone.

I am in the process of upgrading my squid outfit.

Rod will be a Major Craft Pandra Sumidarake PD-782ML or Pandra Over Drive PD-782M

The problem I have is in the reel!

I have a Van Staal VS-100 currently mounted on a Diawa Saltige 63S, perfect combination for casting and rubber jigging.

The Van Staal weights 317g, has a manual bail that works very well once you get used to it and the feature I find the best is the anti-reverse. All other reels, the ant-reverse locks the spool solid, with the Van-Staal, the ant-reverse works like a sock absorber, there is an increasing resistance for about 20mm until full lockup. This gives a mono streaching effect to braid.

I can replace this reel for the Saliga with another Van Staal or a Zee Baas,

or

I can get an Emeraldas Colossal 2508RHW. 265g

As both reels are expensive, so I do not want to end up with a $1K reel that sits on the shelf!!

Any thoughts about the Van Staal as an egi reel??

Hi again,

The reason I am asking is, up here in Cairns, none of the tackle shops have any egi rods and I will be buying the rod from Japan.

I know the Daiwa reel will be a good balance with the Major Caft rods, but I don't know if the Van Staal will be too heavy or not.

i would personaly think that the van staal is a little to much for squid. but i havnt held one so cant comment.

the diawa reels are good ive heard. im going to get the diawa E-GEE which is the step down from the Colossal. they are both nice reels and have there are a few great reports from them.

but i reacon if you get ur rod go in to the store and put the van staal on it and see how it feels and the same as the Colossal.

another opion that quite a few people use is the shimano stradic Ci4 which is a good squidding reel but also doubles up as a light spinning reel.

hope this helps. good luck.

hey mate

imo the emeraldas colossal is a bit overkill for aus waters. It is a very good reel, but A: when casting and retreiving all day the weight will get to you, B: the drag is too much as well, C: the weight of the reel might not balance on the majorcraft.

few other reels too consider should be shimano sephia (ci4, bb) Daiwa emeraldas (white version) and new on the market daiwa emeraldas inf (watered down version of the emma at entry level) and the E-Gee.

I have also heard several reports that the pandra's quality isnt what it used to be and have heard of the blanks breaking very easily, so maybe consider something else. At the end of the day it is your decision,

Hedi01, what's your message got to do with squidding?!!

Go for the Colossal 2508, van staal is way to heavy, also not too sure how it handles PE lines ect. Or get a new Stella FE, problem solved.

Cheers,
