Places where squid gathers
#1
I know having lighting attracts the smaller bait to gather therefore the squid will come around to chase them down.

But there are places that has lights that has no squids at all.

What really make them gather to a certain area but not others?

I don't know about all squid. The ones we get in the Northeast US live out around the continental shelf drop-off. Through a series of connected events (moon, tide, temperature, bait, etc.), they move inshore to feed and breed. They will eat until their biological instincts and some environmental queues tell them it is time to breed. They do and then the males die. Shortly after, the female will lay her eggs and die. She lays her eggs where there rocks and weeds, which typically means the same structure which attracts other fish. The various charter boats will head out to the inshore reefs and catch squid there. As for what makes them gather certain places, I would say they gather where there are places to hide. From the time they are laid, as eggs, they are food for every single creature out there in the water. Being the bottom of the food chain, they act like all bottom-of-the-food-chain creatures.
