Had a surprising experience a few days ago. We had been fishing around Barrenjoey until the wind picked up. We decided to drop a line in at a small bay off Smiths creek on the way back to the ramp.
Within a couple of minutes one our baits was followed up by a squid. I always carry a handline with a squid jig rigged in the boat, and by the time I grabbed it there were 3 squid hanging around the bait that we kept suspended in the water. What followed was a frenzied attack by squid, one after the other. Within 10 minutes we had eleven in the boat. They were Arrow squid, and all had hoods around 20 centimetres. I have never fished for squid in the Cowan but will make a point of dropping a bait down into these little bays in future.
