Was in Jamestown tonight was fishing for stripers..Seen a whole lot of schools of squid. People that was fishing for it only had luck on the pen cap looking jigs or just plain old snagged them. I didn't give it a try for squid but did catch one 31" striper.

was at jamestown dem last night from 7 until 1 am... nothing! saw a few squid swim by around 11. i wouldn't even call them a school. my squidding season was pretty pathetic. there were alot of blues and striper action in the water. from 7 until 9 they were boiling on the surface and even came close to the wall... it was like a scene from the discovery channel come to life. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

For what its worth, the Frances Fleet is still making trips, although it seems it is slowing there too.

Tried Jamestown last night for a few hrs...fished with another guy...Just 2 of us in the whole area.



Lots of sm-med squid around. Very picky. They came. They left. Came again, hung out & circled the lit up area the whole ebb tide. Tried pretty much every jig I had. And I have plenty of jigs lol.



Some cautiously approached the jig...some swam right past it like it wasnt even there...and some were just totally spooked out by the presence of any jig, nomatter what shape, sz or color...Just not hungry/aggressive.



I managed to get just under a doz...2 of them I just happened to snag. We probably couldve gotten more. But it was like trying to walk up a down escalator. After a little while it got frustrating as hell & we left.



Maybe one last trip to GI & im done..................til fall <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer_mug.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':beer' />

The waters are too warm down Newport and Striped Bass have been invading the area so Squids are kinda scarce. Frances Fleet maybe slowing down to about a little under a bucket a person rather than 1.5 bucket/person. I think Squidders are all squided out and have full freezers. I'm gonna probably head out to Green Hill Monday night and will post a report.

The squid are here in the Fall?

Some mentioned Green Hill but when I look at it on a sattelite photo all I see are sandy beaches.



Does anyone here catch squid off a beach? I thought squid were usually caught in deep water like in newport & Jamestown off of bridges & docks.



Why are Newport & Jamestown so productive & popular if not for the deep, clean water?



If the beaches @ Green Hill are productive wouldn't Scarborough & the like be productive as well?

From what I hear a lot of them haven't spawn yet so their feeding.

Which is why the squids choose their locations. They attach their eggs to reefs. They're usually these seaweed that seem to cling onto rocks. That's what squids attach their eggs to. There are a lot of reefs in Newport and more in Green Hill. Reefs are around beaches so it makes sense squids are around too.

Squid will travel inshore to lay eggs so their young would prosper with the abundance of food in the shallows. The squid you catch in the fall are the hatchlings from the spring's spawn. They grow very fast!

I caught all of this on nature channels. Yea, I have too much time on my hands.

Nice information Squid_man!

If you do catch some, can you let us know if they are still carrying eggs?

I am curious, besides liking the squid for obvious reasons, as to what is affecting their spawing. I was under the impression that temperature was the deciding factor but there may be something else messing with the spawning. It just seems really late compared to a copuple of years ago.

There's lots of squid... there appear to have eggs in them and they're feeding aggressively. They didn't start biting around 9:45 when it pitch dark and bait started to form around our hydroglow. The squid were relatively low and look to be a different species than the long armed ones.

Thanks for the clarification Tatonka. I guess they're females and as you can see thru the pics above they're carrying eggs. At Green Hill they were spooky at first but all of a sudden they went on a feeding frenzy and ate everything in site. They primarily would eat silversides and juvenile butterfish. I had my luck with jigging and using a light 8 foot radius or 16 diameter cast net. They didn't seem bothered by the cast net and would still group up and hit the jigs like crazy. They maybe a little more wary up Newport.

I would remove them and use them as an ingredient for stuffed calimari. My grandpa would just remove the squid insides and cook the roe inside of the squid and eat as is.

was fishing in Jamestown this past weekend and I was amazed that people was still fishing for squid and catching. all small to medium size squids..I did see some very large squids swim by.



I always thought squid would have been gone by now..Man its been a strange fishing season.
