Dentrecasteaux Channel, TAS

Hello,



I am new to Tassie and would like to get into fishing, specifically catching squid. I am nearest to the Dentrecasteaux Channel and have just bought some gear and although I have fished plenty before, I am from inland Victoria and am unfamiliar with sea fishing so I have a few quick queries and it would be great if anyone could answer my questions or point to somewhere that I can get the info I am after.

What are some good places? (preferably between Kingston and Gordon for squid and fishing in general)



I love fishing and am keen to get into it down here. Although sea fishing will differ from fishing the Murray River, I am looking forward to it and really apprecite any light you guys could throw on my queries.

Hi Dave,



All the way down the channel is generally good for the squid.



I am based in kingston and normally like to get to the jetties near the fish factories just south of margate.



gordon jetty also quite often allows good jigging of a night.

[There are good squid in the channel now. (mid March) Fishing from a boat I have caught a few off Middleton but have been mostly flathead fishing there. On 11 March two of us caught 23 arrow squid of good size in about an hour at mid-dayat the top of the channel off Dennes Point on north Bruny Island. The tide was almost full with with minimal flow. We used plain red and green jigs. Red started off well and then green took three to each one on red. I suspect we could have caught many more but we had plenty as well as a good catch of flathead. We ended up covered in ink but the sport was very hot.

Powder Jetty at Tinderbox had ink everywhere on Saturday 8th Jan 2011. I went down there at around 9pm, at low tide, and didn't catch anything, though.



My guess (which is a total stab in the dark) is that the skilled anglers were down there either at high tide (mid afternoon) or very early in the morning, which would have been a receding tide.



The seagrass beds on the RHS of the jetty were only about 2m deep when I was there.



Will try again over the coming week, when the high tide coincides with twilight.



Hopefully will have some luck.





There are no lights down there.



Any suggestions?
