Check out the conditions from a weather forecast site first before going. In particular the swell and swell direction are important. Just a rule of thumb any swell over 2m is high and you should not attempt fishing in these conditions unless it is a very high ledge and you know the spot very well.
As for safety equipment, life-vests and rock spike boots are your lifelines. These days life-vests are now very stylish and useful with many pockets where you can put your lures, leaders, line cutters, pliers and some basic terminal tackle. Just like the one you can see in my profile picture.
