Man vs Squid....Squid Won!

Humbling experience...I was fishing the 3 inch Mirror lenz squid jig by Youzuri. The squid would not commit! As soon as they got close they veered off. Most squid that attacked the jig attacked the wrong end, aiming for the feathers up front. Most hooked squid let go just as they cleared the surface. Also....as soon as you landed 1 squid, the school would leave as if they sensed danger.

 

Tried high low with a sinker. High low w/o...single jig. All on 6lb Flouro....I am haveing all kinds of trouble finding squid jigs smaller than 3" which may be the ticket.

 

Even tried  tipping the jig with a piece of clam. So I drove 3 hrs, lost 2 squid jigs and came home with 9 puny squid!

 

Any tips you guys can share for when these things are this skittish would be appreciated...

 

Also....can they be Chummed?? I used to see loads of em in the Hudson Canyon as soon as the slop hit the water...bu that may have been more of a function of the lights. Was thinking of mixing cat food with sea water to make a slick.

 

At the end of the tide schoolie stripers were checking out the jigs.

I'm confused by that once they were hooked, they let go? It could be you reeling in technique that rips it out of their tenticles or candles. If you leave the drag relatively loose and reel slow but steady, keeping pressure, most squid will be caught.

I have landed one squid before with the others in fear. I usually change the jig colour or size so you don't think they are under threat. You can also leave that spot for 10-20mins and then comeback. It has worked for me in the past.

Yeah well I heard squid attacks when the jig is sinking . If you keep throwing infront of it and jigging, I'm assuming it would just look unnatural so if you cast further and retrieved slowly ,maybe they would act more aggressive than curious and backing off lol.
