squid farming
#1
 Hi there all , Just wondering if any one has ever heard of squid farming in enclosed structers in the sea. I have been trying to find out some information about this. If anyone has any information they would like to share please email me. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Hi Spud,

You didn't leave an email address for people to email u!

I know squid can be kept in captivity (i.e. fish tanks) but it is not easy. I have never heard about the ocean net/cage scenario.

I can't see why you couldn't keep them in nets/cages. Issues you would need to consider might include:

- whether the squid you are interested in are territorial? are they happy to live in large numbers in a confined space?

- do the squid in question like to hover in one spot or like to swim long distances? this will have an impact on the size of the cage.

- would it be commercially viable? why would you bother when you can just catch them out of the ocean?

- what level of canibalism will occur? can you ensure the squid size is relatively even so that there is less temptation for them to eat each other?

- what food would you feed them?

Let us know what your research reveals,
