Jazman,
I have never fished Manly, however I have occasionally seen people squidding off various jetties along the main boardwalk with some success. They were there in the late afternoon and they had a few squiddies. They weren't particularly large specimens, hoods perhaps a foot to a foot and a half, so I'd suggest your friend starts with smaller jigs around those areas.
Another plan would be to get a harbour map of all the wharves. Many of the wharves serviced by the Sydney Harbour Ferries are renowned squid spots, and your friend may well be able to ride a ferry from Manly to most of those locations.
On the other hand, if your pal has access to a boat, there are plenty of squidding grounds not far from there, particularly in the middle harbour areas. Tell him to get onto the fishnet website and do a trawl through all the old chatboards for some boat locations.
Best of luck,
monkeyman

Hi monkeyman
Thanks heaps for your advice, you have certainly given my mate a good start. About using small jigs, I find that I usually get more squid on smaller jigs, regardless of what size squid are about. And 1-1.5 foot hoods seem pretty good sized, compared to what I usually get!
Wishing you success next time you chase squid
Cheers
Jazman

Hey Jazman how you doing!? Thanks for the info on squidding in Manly. What I would like to know are more specific spots people might try in this area and some advice people have in cathcing the little bastards. Not much luck yet, so I think I am doing something wrong. What times would you go for example.
Hope Uni is going well dude, and I will see you in Melbourne on the 11th Dec hopefully.
Send me an email dude I don't have your address. colseyrm@hotmail.com
Later.
Dr Colsey.

The monkey is glad that such vague advice worked out. I haven't been out squidding for ages, will be out over the summer. Will aim to post reports from my travels.

Finally got back into fishing and squidding last weekend.
This time of year we usually fish middle harbour for Kingfish and always start by catching squid (or trying to). In the past we have been lucky enough to get good sized squid and just use the heads and "fins"? for bait leaving the squid bodies to take home and eat, but not so last weekend. We usually start squidding around Manly ...... there are a couple of rocky outcrops that we anchor off just south of Manly wharf and esplanade but further out along the Nothern shoreline there is a point that is not assessible from land for the general public and this has generally been a reliable spot to start. On Saturday we caught 6 squid fairly quickly but they were all quite small. The water was very clear and we actually saw a number of the squid take the lure and some others swimming nearby without strikes. All the squid were caught in about two metres of water. This was a surprise as we usually pull at least one larger squid from the deeper water around there. We moved on to a couple of other spots but had no luck at all so put the light rods away and went looking for Kingfish.
If we were after squid for a meal it would not have been a great outing but we managed to turn them into 4 Kingies all over 70cm so it was a good mornings fun after all.
