Squid fishing in Rhode Island is the best around the East Coast. You can expect at least 2 gallon worth around the fall season. Spring season yields at least 5 gallon a person. It does get mighty crowded though. Elbow tight...??? I would rather say hand tight. That's pretty much all you can get over the bridge if you come late. People have come as far as Oregon and Washington (STATE) to squid fish. They usually camp over for weeks on end!

There were about ten other guys out there and they said the same. Two said that they had seen some really small ones, but were un able to catch any. If you hear of anyone with luck please let me know. I'm in desperate need of them for my research. If any one has any luck, email me at truell( at )mail.uri.edu please.

Squid... What squid!? I went there on Saturday night and nothing! I'm going to try squidding in Newport next week. Anyone have any spots they can tell me?
Kool, I'll have to add this place to my favorite list! Never been here before, looking around and decided to type in "squid" NO no squid in Newport yet! Too many of us are heading down, we're trying to organize everything so that we radomly go down there to save gas money and tolls. BUT according to all records for the past 10 years in my book, the SQUID are always here by MAY 1 st. However, if you get down the early, the fisrt ones are usually BIG ones, I tell people, catching just one of these early ones, it'll hang over the bucket! Some at least a foot n a half long! So YES it might be COLD but the last week of April is always a gamble!
I have to say the squid did trick us last yaer, I believe they came in in mid April due to the very early warm weather we had then. OK, hope we keep eachother posted n see you there!

Went down to Goat Island and stayed out there on teusday night and there was nothing about 4 other people were there but they weren't catching anything so.. Seems like squid season is a big thing up your way. Thats interesting because down here in Australia, well in South Australia anyway, squid can be caught pretty much all year round. Generally the bigger ones are taken from october through january, but with a bit of work and know how a feed can be caught all year round.

So you get Squid Year Around huh??? Sounds NICE!!!! So what size of squid do you usually catch over in your area?? What type of jigs, and what size do you use??
Here in my area, Washington State, USA average size is about 8" or so, and people use a wide variety of jigs usually about 3" long generally a luminous color.

I don't know what the access to fishing areas around there, but I'm guessing it's crowded on the lighted docks???? You could find and unlighted dock, and bring your own light??? That's usually what I do!!! I have a portable unit with a 12V marine battery, and an AC/DC power inverter. I have a high pressure sodium flood light 250 Watt that I use, works GREAT!!! The high pressure sodium lights are better because you get more light and uses less power than a halogen light. The 250 watt HPS light puts out about 6 X as much light as a 500 watt halogen, but only uses 250 watts worth of power. With my setup, I actually have two marine batteries and can get about 7 + hours out of it at full charge.
Setup like that, and you can get the squid to come to you, instead of you going to the squid... <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
Best time that I have found generally though is right before and right after it gets dark, even better if it's an incoming tide and at slack tide.

There is a bridge between Newport city and Goat Island and that's where people fish for squid. The bridge is not that long, just a couple hundred yards. On Goat Island there is a Hyatt Hotel and a yacht club. The bridge is well lighted so squid are attracted to the area. People are allowed to fish only on one-side of the bridge so it gets crowded. On weekend nights a lot of people bring lanterns and the whole place is lit up and it's quite a sight.
Yes it is quite a spectacular site to the fisherman. The one thing I despise about squid season and fishing on the bridge is the harrassment of motorist enrouting towards the hotel. Especially, during the spring which collides with prom season. One altercation last season, a boy shouts at an elderly woman "You dirty whore", it blew my fuses. I ran after the car but as evidently enough, car is faster than man. This season, I shall 3 oz. sinkers in my hand... (^_~)

The bridge is too narrow and it allowed only one side fishing, sometimes motorist driven too fast, they should be driving slow down, anyway is the squid show up yet ??? anyone knows, thanks in advance .

The average size of squid is not overly big during the colder months - usually range from around 300g-1kg, but during september/october when it warms up, they get into the 2kg and 3kg range............
The average ones are around a foot in length (mantle only), and the 3kg ones are sometimes 2-3times that...........
I usually use baited jigs, and have a prawn style one sitting below me (where i pull them in) in case they fall off, or have followers..........

just on the baited jigs there nathan, do u prefer to use the smaller barbs that u find on a prawn style jag, or do u use the bigger wider barbs, i am currently using that style and quite often see me float go under, but having a lot of trouble hooking them up, <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
Remember you cant keep all of the squid happy all of the time, only some of the squid some of the time...

Paulus - i use the wider ones, but use a smaller tommie, or something like a gar or pilchard, so that it sits inside the bards.......alternatively, get down to Sportfishingscene at O'Halloran Hill and look at theirs- it had both styles of barbs in one!!
