[quote name='glen' date='Dec 18 2003, 04:05 PM']Hi everyone,
I was just wondering whether anyone had fished in Nova Scotia or Newfoundland for squid? Either recreational or commercial squid fishing.
Seems that the east coast USA is quite productive. Surely Canada is just as good!? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' />

This isn't an answer really, but I was wondering what part of the squid a person eats, when served "calamari" at a restaurant. My husband says it is the tenacles (sp?) but I thought it was the part around the "eye" or the base of the squid.

Hello sorry it took so long for me to reply,
You asked me what type of squid do we catch well Iam not sure to tell ya the truth, they grow up to....2 feet , including their tangtagles,
We catch them from Augest to late october,We mostly use open speet boats around 18 to 24 feet in lenth.
As you can see in the picture that i sent in my previous reply,Its what we call a squid hauler, we catch them for commerical and for our own use.We deep fry them after they are cut up in sections, which we call squid rings,
The season failed this year ,because it seems that squid in our part of the world are in a cycle ,they come for around 7 years and then for some unknown reason they could be gone for 4 to 6 years,
Now that they are gone ,when they come back, each year after ,the fishing gets better till it peaks and suddenly cuts off.

thanks very much for your reply squid head.
2 feet squid is pretty big! i guess its worth waiting the 5 or 6 years for them to return!
hope they come back sooner this time!
all the best,
