I reckon it might be that on the bigger squid we can see the 'top' (coloured) side, but on the smaller one we can see the 'bottom' (white) side.
Whatever the reason, what a great shot! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Well done on a good catch <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':clover:' /> Jaz

Exactly right Jazman - i was so worried about that photo not coming out properly, as i wanted to have proof..........But it turned out awesome!!
Only dissapointment is that we didnt land them both -also, what you cant see in the photo is the other half a dozen squid hanging around, that i was trying to catch!!
SA - the land of the bigger fish. The fish on the east, measure the least, but if you head west, you'll be bringing in the best!!

Hi everyone.
Ive caught only a few squid in my life basically all on the same day when I was young and went to Rapid Bay with my old man. He done all the rigging, setting up, etc and we managed to get about 10 squid including a couple cuttles. I caught 2 or 3 myself. Anyway he never really taught me how to set up or even fish properly, so it was luck really that I managed to get some. So recently I've wanted to start squidding again. I went out during Janruary earlier this year to Rapid Bay and spent most of the day getting suburnt on the jetty. I felt a lot of what I thought were bites but got nothing. It was late in the afternoon and my brother had started moving some of the gear into the car, than I pulled up a squid! It was my first squid ever that I had caught completely on my own. I had chose my location, set up my own rig, cast it out and reeled it in completely by myself. This was a huge acheivement for me as I had never caught anything without my dad's help. We weren't taken out fishing very often and I only ever caught a couple small undersize fish with him. The squid's mantle measured 11cm in length, it was a very small squid but the few calamari rings I cooked from it were extremely tasty, like nothing I had before. Fresh calamari is nothing like the rubbery ###### which i dont even like from barnacle bills. We had travelled an insane distance, from up near holden hill all the way down to the Flerieu Penninsula for one small squid. It cost a lot in petrol and other expenses like food and fishing tackle but it sure was worth it. btw sorry for my life story... Anyway since than I have tried squidding at the Bluff at Victor Harbour and even at the Glenelg jetty with no luck whatsoever. Even though at glenelg i had seen some monster squid pulled up i didnt get a bite. I dont have transport at the moment and I want to catch some squid nearby. However at the usually packed jetties I havent seen much fisherman at all besides people netting for blue swimmer crabs. Also there hasnt been any posts in this forum since May. Is right now a bad time for squid? As you can tell I am pretty much a total beginner and need as much help as I can get. I think the squid I caught a rapid bay may of just been good luck. I have read some information on the net about the basics of catching squid but its very hard to put it into practise and return with a squid. Also is it possible to catch squid using a jig on a hand reel? Thankyou if you read all that. So in conclusion I am just needing some basic squidding tips, maybe there is something elementary I am missing? Anything at all you can think of that could make you miss squid or not realise there is one on the line. And maybe some qood squidding locations altough this doesn't do much good as I have been to some of the good ones. Cheers in advance for any help/advice you are willing to give
hi, and welcome to the forum.
as you said, do you like to write a lot! phew. i did manage to get through it though <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> you were asking for places to catch squid that were close to home but you didn't mention where you live. are you based in adelaide? in terms of tips on squid fishing technique, we get that question quite often. please have a search through the forum because i am sure you will find plenty of info on technique. cheers, glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Hi again boys, its been a long time since i been on here, nearly a year, I actually forgot all about the site over the winter. Now the warm weather is upon us, I'm warming up for another season in the water. has there been any action in s.a yet? Be good to hear the latest news.
Remember you cant keep all of the squid happy all of the time, only some of the squid some of the time...

Hey i recently got my liscence and i was wondering where would be best to go squidding at late night early morning times. I have been to ardrossan and that was great but was slow for the most of the time. It was fairly choppy but we managed to catch 12 squid. So where else would be good for late night squidding? By the way I live in Adelaide

Well, several days ago we passed from WA into SA for another visit.
We stopped for a couple days at Fowlers Bay on the far west coast of SA with the plan of getting a few squid......hmmmm The controlling body decided that was not a good idea and produced an onshore wind almost strong enough to even allow walking out on the jetty much less getting a jig in the water. Never mind says I, next stop is Streaky Bay for a weeklong stay <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> ......hmmmmmm Arrived yesterday and unpacked the gear only to find the jetty is closed to all access due to much needed repairs and will be closed for a few months too. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Bumma. Okay, I still have a week to find another platform here, maybe the boat ramp groyne is worth a look. Anyone Know? Regards Neil
