Recent Squid Trip - Western isles of Scotland

i have finaly got a shot at squid fishing yet no luck. i was on holiday to the western isles of scotland (harris and lewis)and was mostly fishing for fish but on a trip to the local pier i was told that there was 1 foot long squid sighted at night because the peir is lit by a large floodlight so i gave it a go with no squid caught . i was casting a small pink squid jig prawn style letting the jig sink and twitching the jig back slowly could anyone tell me what i was doing wrong and any advice would be great and if possible areas for south scotland that i can try.
