Does anyone have any info on the squid species of northern Australia? I'm in Darwin and catch mostly small squid in the dry season, but the occasional monster lobs in from time to time. I have wondered what species they are.
Big and small live squid make very good barramundi bait ...

they are probably northern calamary which are closely related (and look almost the same) as southern calamary.
do they have wings that extend the full length of the mantle (or tube)?

Well i arrived at cullen bay jetty {darwin} at 5am started off squiding fishing under the lights with small pink jigs thier was no waves because of breakwall around marina so got rid of floats and started jiging up and down with road an casting out slowly jigging the pink lure in towards pier no luck but with in an hour the sun was coming up and could see garfish being harrased by small squid so went to bait shop and got some fresh mullet. once i was baited up and in the water i was getting them every 5 or 10 minutes just very small ones nothing at all like the sqiud at Queenscliff in port phillip Victoria but great fun all the same..after i got my feed i decided to bait some of my fresh caught calarmari to see what would take it...Landed 2x one foot trevally... Great fishing wish i had more time there..Ps in daylight fantastic for spotting tropical fish swimming around jetty ..... .
