Squidfish Competition - Great Prizes To Win!
#1
Hi everyone,

Jon at Colman's Fishing Supply has kindly donated 30 squid jigs, 8 sabiki rigs, and some packets of squid hooks to Squidfish. I intend to make these jigs/hooks/rigs available to members who participate in upcoming competitions on the squidfish site.

Rather than just giving out the jigs randomly, I thought I would give the jigs to those members who make valued contributions to the squidfish site. In this way, everyone benefits!

Now I am still throwing some ideas around for the first competition. One thought that sprang to mind was to ask members to provide specific information on a particular topic. For example, I could ask members to identify 5 manufacturers of squid fishing tackle that are not yet mentioned on squidfish. If you provide the information, then you get jigs! (not sure how many each prize winner will receive..perhaps 1 or 2 jigs?)! Another question might be to identify 10 well known squid fishing spots in your state/country that are not yet mentioned on the squidfish site. These are just some ideas!

I am open to suggestions on how to best run the competitions. I have a limited number of jigs so I can't make the questions too easy otherwise I will run out of jigs very quickly! I would hate to be in a position where I have more winners that jigs!

I would appreciate your thoughts before the competitions commence.

I will take photos of the jigs/rigs so that people can see what will be available as prizes.

Cheers, Glen!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Hey Glen

This all sounds like a ploy to get us all to devulge our prized secrets as you dangle a squid jig in front of us,... something we CAN'T resist!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> Big Grin

Sounds like it will be fun <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Good idea Glen, and cheers Jon for prize donation, very generous Big Grin

well done glen sounds like a good idea <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Good idea. Glen you should set up a squid fishing trivia (sad, isnt it? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> ) or something like that. But the topic must be useful to members! I really dont see myself trying to find more jig manufacturers than you already found. Theres already enough jigs to last several lifetimes Big Grin

Here are the photos of the prizes that will be up for grabs.

Click on each image for a closer look. I have given each prize a code (e.g. A1, A2, etc.) so that competition winners can easily identify their preferred prizes.

Commercial style jigs

Prawn style jigs

Sounds great - when does it start?? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
SA - the land of the bigger fish. The fish on the east, measure the least, but if you head west, you'll be bringing in the best!!

Hi everyone,

I have been doing a bit more thinking about the competition.

What I would like to do is to run the competition as a "raffle". You will be able to obtain "raffle tickets" by providing certain requested information. Certain information will be considered more valuable and so will be worth more raffle tickets!

Some of the information that could be requested may include:

1) Translating certain words phrases on the squidfish site into another language (e.g. Translate Squidfish - The world's biggest squid fishing community into any language of your choice)

2) Providing a squid fishing photo (e.g. a photo of a homemade squid jig, photo of a fishing spot, photo of a squid)

3) Provide the details of a squid fishing company (e.g. a manufacturer of squid jigs)

4) Description of a good squid fishing spot

5) Description of a squid fishing publication (e.g. a book, journal article, etc)

It might be decided that, for example, a description of a squid fishing company is worth 5 raffle tickets and a squid fishing photo is worth 2 raffle tickets. So if you submitted the details of 2 squid fishing companies and submitted 1 photo you would have 2*5 + 1*2 = 12 raffle tickets.

So you then would have 12 chances to win the prizes available for that competition period.

There would be a limit on how many raffle tickets any one person could obtain - perhaps 20 raffle tickets?

Then we would run a prize draw and three winners would be selected "out of the hat". The more tickets you have in the hat, the more chances you have of winning a prize.

The prizes might be:

1) First prize - 6 jigs

2) Second prize - 4 jigs

3) Third prize - 2 jigs

How does something like that sound?

Cheers, Glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

p.s. Mr_Willy, the competition will probably start in a couple of weeks. I want to get everyone's feedback first to make sure the competition is fun and fair.

Glen it sounds good except I believe it would be better if the winner didnt get SIX jigs.....seems excessive, and youre gonna run out of those jigs in no time. Just my 2c.

ye i agree with hunter killer. do less jigs for first maybe. example 3 for first 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. this way u'll be able to do more competitions Big Grin
#11
thanks for the feedback hk,

anyone else have any views about the prizes that it would take to make it worth your while to enter a competition?? i want people to feel like they have a fair chance of winning and that it is not too much work to enter.

i have prepared a competition rules page which has not gone live yet. there will also be a competition sub-forum which i have also created (but you can't see it yet) where you can submit your entries.

i will probably publish the competition rules page in a few days. i am just waiting a little longer to hear any final comments from members.

cheers, glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/clover.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Big Grin sounds great glen. keep up the good work
#13
I agree, it seems a better idea to spread the jigs over a number of competitions (or people!) than give out heaps of jigs to just a few people.

Also, how will you work out postage of prizes Glen? I think it's unfair for you to pay for sending people their prizes, how about if someone wins a prize, send Glen a stamped self-addressed envelope - jigs for the price of postage, can't do much better than that! Big Grin

Another thought, you could potentially increase membership to the site by making entry only open to registered members (not sure if you want this or not!)

Great suggestion Jazman. I was wondering about that before.

Also I think RX3 BOI's idea to make it 3 jigs for 1st, 2 for second and 1 for third is great. Personally I cant picture myself putting 6 jigs to good use <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blueboxbullet.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

One way to win raffle tickets is through product reviews Id say. Im talking about an in-depth discussion of the pros and cons of various gear(ie jigs) that is useful for all. We got Yo Zuri fans, Yamashita fans and Razorback fans. A detailed discussion about Yamashitas for example would be really informative for me as Ive always wondered what they are like. Another idea is as glen suggested which is to produce new company information. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/zorro.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

hey guys,

thanks for all your comments.

the cost of postage is one of the reasons why i was tending toward 6, 4, 2 jigs as prizes. in this way, i would have less packages to post overall. i have not investigated the postage costs yet but i guessed that i cannot place them in a standard envelope. i was prepared to pay for postage but will try to keep it as low as i can. for example, if someone overseas wins prizes i will try to find a cheap postage rate (but delivery time may take a little longer as a result).

maybe what i can do is say have 3 or 4 jigs for first prize and also add in 1 or 2 sabiki jigs as extra because i suspect they will not be as popular as the jigs anyway. also i suspect the prawn style jigs will be more popular than the commercial style jigs. i could put a quota on how many prawn jigs any winner can receive? what do you guys think?

i like the idea of product reviews. this will be added to the list of raffle-ticket-winning activities.

and yes the competition will only be open to members. also only members who are logged in will be able to post messages in the new "competition forum".

cheers, glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

hey glen and guys. maybe everyone could put a little donation and give it to glen to help cover postage and stuff. but if that fails. i think the winner should get in contact with glen and somehow pay for the postage costs. i recieved 6 jigs in a padded bag ithink there about $2. dont quote me though from aus post.

Glen,

I have been selling stuff on ebay and i work out how much postage will cost me from:

Post Charges Booklet

It contains prices for tough bags/padded bags etc and their sizes so you can accurately work out how much it will cost. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

I think it is only fair that the winner pays for postage, not YOU! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />

Have a range of payment methods available; self addressed envelope/direct deposit/ or money order

Look forward to the start of the comp <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />
