Keeping Gar Fish Alive

If you get a large tub or bucket, fill it with seawater, and attach a cheap aerator from a pet shop or tackle shop (shouldn't be much more than $20), I think they should last the night. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

i hear that garfish die very easily. that is partly why there is no size limit. so you might get them dying even though you are careful with them. let us know how you go!

handle them from the head so you minimise the amount of scales/slime rubbing off their body.... i think its this protective covering that comes off easily and the poor gars dont survive back in the water for much longer

Yeah, even when used as live baits, gar are very hard to keep alive - mainly because even the slightest touch will take off a lot of their scales.........but there's not harm in trying. And besides, the next best thing to live bait, is fresh bait!!

A 20lt mayonnaise bucket is ideal for storing or transporting livies, but'll you need a small aerator to keep the watrer oxygenated, otherwise your hard-earned baits cark it before you can present them to mr.lizard (flathead)



for best results, pin your live baitsthrough the nose with a chemically sharpened wide gaped hook!

if you want the real deal you can buy a live bait tank from some tackle shops. also some boats have these built in. but im sure the bucket with an aerator works just fine.
