Giant squid: Giant squid ranging from 20-0 to 35-0 continue to be landed from San Diego to Oceanside. Squid jigs or white iron dropped to the bottom then wound quickly to the boat has been best tactic. Boat captains are recommending that anglers fish with 30- or 40-pound-test line and wear ponchos to protect clothing from flying ink when a gaffed squid is brought aboard. Last Thursday, 51 anglers aboard a twilight trip on the New Seaforth, Seaforth Sportfishing, San Diego, landed 290 squid from 15-0 to 30-0. ....

Quote:Giant Squid: The local fleet was boating them off San Diego last year at this time, but thus far, the Humboldt squid have been elusive. Steve Ross reports that commercial panga shark fishermen are reporting schools of giant squid 25 miles west of Ensenada.

Quote:During the past week, San Diego boats have caught yellowtail, bluefin tuna, bigeye tuna, skipjack tuna, marlin, dorado, yellowfin tuna, short billed spearfish, bonito, and giant squid. Many of those same species have been caught by Los Angeles/Orange county based boats too. The Bongos III had seven yellowfin tuna and more than 30 skipjack on Wednesday fishing only 25 miles from Newport Beach.

Quote:The jumbo Humboldt squid have shown up off Ensenada and Oceanside and now straight off Mission Bay (below the 178), according to anglers Marty Morris and Harry Okuda. They landed three of the jumbo squirters up to 40 pounds or more on Wednesday night.
