Newport, RI - 2005 squid season
#41
will they stay next weekend? I am thinking to go next weekend, but not sure they will leave or not, because the stripers are around and eat them <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> .

My buddy and I went pretty late last year (actually started pretty late, I think we started at the end of May last year) and still caught some (not a lot, but caught some).

I bear bad news!

I was out all last night with 3 friends on a boat and we were armed with with many... many... new lures... of which I lost half of them. The past two times I have gone there have been at least 10 other boats very close by jigging squid. Last night there were only 2. The hold-over Bass from up in the Bay have taken up residence in the Newport area and put a dent in the squid populations. There was only one gas lantern at the causeway that we could see and it was not there for long. There were VERY localized schools still around.

I think Newport is just about over. I hope some other people have better luck.

Newbie.

My buddy got almost a full bucket last night. He said the peak is after sunset, 8-10PM. After 10, he saw more squids on the surface, for some reason, he didn't catch much. So, don't give up!

Sounds like fishing is still going well!!!! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

From my experience, the squid that often in larger schools near the surface don't bite that well, and have a mind of their own. It seems the squid that are a bit deeper, from about 10ft to the bottom are the ones that bite better.

I have heard from other customers that squid are available all summer, just not along the shoreline. They tend to find them out when they are fishing for fluke near the bottom with bait. The squid keep eating the bait, but they are hard to hook that way. I would recommend in those situations to try using a baited squid jig (we have those available).

Hi everyone,

I was just having a look at the new Google Satellite Photo Tool and I believe this is a map of Goat Island and the bridge you guys are all fishing from. Can someone please confirm this is the correct bridge!

Cheers, Glen

Glen,

Yup, that's most definitely the bridge. Now if only I can find the time to get back out there and try again...

Visited some of my friends in Newport yesterday. They are still catching a few squid but the run is basically over. May 2005 will go down as one of the best years for squid in the past 20 years. The locals who fished several days a week at Goat Island often caught 50 to 100 pounds of squid in one day. Many have freezers full of squid.
#53
Saturday, June 4: Squid still around Goat Island. Caught around 50 starting at 6 AM. They were along the stone wall by the park. They were not catching any off the bridge.
#54
I caught about 15 at Sat. night under someone's light. After 11 pm you can see them but no bites.
#55
i went there with 2 of my buddy, we got about bucket full, from friday 1 am into friday afternoon around 4 PM. I had most of luck on white yo-zu-ri. I out squid my buddy by a lot. They were using Green and red. Very strange they will be standing next to me and catch nothing, i'll be pulling them in one after another. I guess color are very important. I'll will be visit again next year, but early May we have planty of stripbass to keep us busy at NJ any where from 24inch to 40inchs. They feed just like squid in school. anyone interest should visit here. Tight line.
