Spear Gear

in light of the giant marlin speared in new zealand by some champion, i am no upgrading to extreme spearfishing.



For this I will require the following:



wetsuit

hood

weight belt

powerfull spear gun

ab knife

Multi purpose stay sharp knife

flippers



I also need wetsuit recomendations because untill now I've bare chested it all year round. Nothing shrinks a mans nuggets more than a spear fish in his speedos in july.



Righto my learned friends, where are the bargains, what are the brands and does an extra rubber on my existing spear compromise my accuracy?

thanks mate I'll check it out. Theres bugger all diving shops on the peninsula and the ones they do have are shite. Usually I if I need something I go to Hitchy's fishing shop in Rye - they've got better snorkelling gear than the dive shop half the time!



Also you are the first persopn Ive ever heard say that stingray is good to eat... I fear I'll need a more resounding response to persuade me to partake in a bite.

Because there is a fairly small spearfishing fraternity in Victoria, the gear tends to be expensive compared to say Queensland - the same is true of SCUBA equipment, apparently it has to do with water temp down here in Vic ie/ the water is colder, less people dive, so less people buy gear, so Vic dive shops make the gear more expensive so that they don't go bust (although lots still do!).

SO the best way to get a real bargain is either to buy your gear while on holidays in Qld or NSW, or to order your gear from a shop based in Qld or NSW and get them to post it down. That's what I did with my SCUBA gear a few years ago, and ended up getting a set of gear that would have cost me $2000 in Victoria for less than $1200...including postage!!

thats a great tip there jazman, could you tell me what the names of the dive shops are because I'm going to go banannas and by a heap of ###### that I've been meaning to get for years.

Also jazman, do ya think another rubber on my spear gun will make it much more powerful or is it more of a hinderance than anything? How much more powerfull are the bigger guns because I'm a bit disapointed in my spear guns power and acuracy at the minute.

I have lost the details of the shop I bought my stuff from, but it was a dedicated SCUBA shop and didn't stock spearing gear. If I were you I'd do a search on the net for spearfishing shops in QLD and NSW, then get in contact and ask if they'd be willing to post stuff down to VIC - if you're buying a lot of stuff they should be. You'll have to prepay - credit card or funds transfer (what I did). The bloke I dealt with wouldn't post the gear until the funds were in his account - fair enough I thought. It would help if you figure out exactly what you want to buy, then shop around for best prices. Doing it this way entails a fair bit of work on your part, but I belive it is justified by the savings.



As for the double rubber, I've never used a gun with 2 rubbers, just a large gun with one large rubber. 2 rubbers would make a gun more powerful and I guess more accurate (spear would drop less over a given distance). Can't imagine it would be much of a hindrance, just that you'd have to pull back one extra rubber. If your gun was performing well, and now is not, maybe it is just time for a new rubber? Makes a big difference. Another thing, if you want to put another rubber on your existing gun you need to make sure that the muzzle (part that holds the rubbers) can actually accomodate 2 - mine has a spot for a second rubber, but I don't use it.

Don't get me wrong, just trying to help, with the greatest respect getting involved in "extreme spearingfishing" is a bit more than buying the gear. The main killer of spearos for example? Shallow water blackout.



My humble advice, go for it, but with the right advice.



As for Sea Hornet, don't waste your money. They can not be upgraded in power as the trigger mechanism gets so hard to squeeze that all accuracy goes out the window. They are considered a toy by most spearos. Get an Undersea for around the same bucks a much better buy, or better still any of the railguns sold in a spearo store if you can spare the extra bucks.

Its good to have an experienced diver around to answer some of the more complicated questions! I only do a bit of snorkelling myself. Jazman does a lot of diving and knows a lot. He has mentioned shallow water blackout before. As I understand it divers suffer from this condition (and die as a result) if they hyper-ventilate before free diving? Is there any other situations where a diver needs to be mindful of SWB?
