Hello,
I've just found this forum and it has once again sparked my interest in squid fishing.
By way of introduction my name is John and I have fished in lots of States (I have travelled with work for many years). All my fishing has been land based and I've fished for lots of varieties based on making local friends and taking their advice.
I was introduced to squid fishing while living in Canberra. The familly used to have camping holidays around Batemans Bay. I'd moved from WA and was used to catching big taylor and salmon, so went out to a rock ledge and cast a 'mulie' (WA name for pilchard) under a float. Lots of downs but no hook-ups. A passer-by suggested this might be a suid. So off to the shop for a suid rig and placed the pilchard on the jig. Result lots of very big and tasy squid. I then moved to suid lure fishing with lots of success, but size was significantly reduced. Not only was the squid excellent eating but provided great bait for the rock snapper fishing. But that was six years ago and since then I have moved to Brisbane. I now do all my fishing in Caloundra while on holidays. I mainly focus on luderick during winter but do a bit of fishing for bream etc. I've scannned the website and now realise that squid fishing around Brisbane is a really possibilty and have seen the reports about fishing off the piers.
So I',m iterested in any advice members can provide. I would prefer to fish during the day (I would be great to go out with other squid fishermen at night if anyone was interested, but i don't have the motivation to go out by myself). I'd also prefer not to fish off piers; any suggestions where there might be good land based weed beds that would be productive. If I need to fish from piers then I would probably try a pilchard on a rig, but I notice fom other topics most people fish with lures. I'd appreciate your thoughts on baits Vs lures.
Anyway its great to find this site and I hope to be catching (and eating) a squid soon.
