Giant Squid In Melbourne

Has anyone been down to Melb. Aquarium? Apparently the latest display features a giant frozen squid caught off N.Z. Also some live squid

The Melb Museum also has a marine life exhibition that also features giant squid.

MONSTERS OF THE DEEP @ MELBOURNE AQUARIUM

Monsters of the Deep have surfaced at Melbourne Aquarium in time for these summer holidays, featuring the never seen before deep water Giant Squid, frozen in time. The incredible new exhibit sees the 7 metre squid weave and wind its way through a massive square block of ice that weighs an amazing 3.5 tonnes. As this enormous creature usually lives 1,000 metres beneath the surface, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to come face-to-face with a giant squid. But be prepared to be scared…as its evil looking eye is absolutely gigantic!

The mystery and intrigue continues with a journey through eerie deep sea caves where you will find live dumpling squid, bioluminescent fish and octopus. Make sure you experience the adventure of monster tales and legends from the darkest depths of the sea this summer at Melbourne Aquarium.

you will need to somehow get through the block of ice that it is frozen in!

New squid on the (ice) block

ITS GIGANTIC eye might give the kids nightmares for the rest of summer, but Melbourne Aquarium curator Nick Kirby insists his newest treasure — a seven-metre giant squid — is worth every cent he paid for it.



The 250-kilogram creature, caught by commercial fishermen off New Zealand's South Island earlier this year, has cost the aquarium more than $100,000, which included purchasing and transporting the squid. The bill also included displaying the squid in a purpose-built 3½-tonne block of ice.



Mr Kirby said his prize investment would allow Melburnians to lay eyes on a creature that had rarely been seen, demonised in mythology and bad-mouthed in biology.
