Wanted: Squid!
#1
I am doing a research project at the University of Melbourne which requires the use of squid. We are looking at the large nerve axon of the squid which is a very useful model of nerve firing.

We have tried catching some squid at the piers around St Kilda and a bit further down the coast but have had no luck - and patience. We would be willing to pay someone for any squid that they catch. The only issue is that we need the squid alive - or at least very fresh - to do the dissection. So if anyone is planning to go squid fishing, maybe you could let us know and we would come down to the pier.

If anyone is interested, please let me know

hi researchDude,

You probably won't catch many squid at St Kilda.

Heading further south should provide better results! At least get as far as Mornington.

If you cannot get any recreationals fisherman to help out, you might consider contacting MAFRI (at Queenscliff) who may assist you in getting some squid!

Another thing to consider...what type of squid are you after? The most common types around Melbourne are Southern Calamari and Arrow Squid.
