Safety Beach, VIC
#21
Fished Safety Beach on 27 May 2003 between 10:00am and 1:00pm.

The wind was variable, the tide was rising, the water was clear to 8 metres.

Calamari were hard to find, but 7 medium sized specimens landed on the boat via the trusty orange jig. One came from a green jig. The tide ran too fast for any more. Almost all were taken in over 6 metres of water.

Fished the rest of the tide for flathead and got enough flattie tails for three meals.

Will try again tomorrow.

In any case, the Bay was beautiful and the day was relaxing. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

It's been a long time since I updated this post.

Some small calamari have been caught but the main weed bed along the Mt Martha headland has been reduced. The best location is around the mussel culture farm and back towards the jetty at Safety Beach.

The depth is around 8 metres and orange multicoloured jigs work the best.

I have only been chasing the calamari for bait for schnapper. The schnapper are very friendly and have accepted many of my invitations to come for dinner.

The couta have been prolific, biting off most whiting rigs and, I dare say, keeping the squid from venturing too far.

When the couta have been away, the whiting and calamari have come on strong.

We'll have to wait for the schnapper to eat the couta before we get into the calamari.

I will be giving it another go this Sunday, but I don't hold much hope. But .... you never know.

The ramp is not steep. It takes 3 boats at a time. It is exposed to the SW but otherwise OK.

I launch my 5.95m Stabicraft without any problems.

Parking can be a problem if it is very busy.

On the plus side, its not far to the whiting and calamari grounds ... about 1 km.

I have fished the grounds at Safety Beach and so have many of my comrades.

Everyone says the calamari are not around. Strange considering they are just finishing their spawning session.

On the plus side, the area is rich in trevally, whiting and schnapper.

Maybe the calamari are getting belted by the local fish.

Anyone got the same problem?
