All you have to do to know how the fishing is, is look at the webcam in Hyannis Harbor
and see if these 2 boats are at the dock or not, in the AM. If these 2 boats are out- there's fish, if they are in, the weather is really bad , or there is lousy fishing.

I'm from connecticut and will be a first time squid fishing. I was thinking of towing my boat up here. My quesiton is where is the best place to launch the boat and best spot to squid fishing? thanks..

That's amazing. You are a master. Would you be my squidding Sensei?
If so: What weight pole and line do you use?
How do you rig your jigs?
What kind of jigs do you use?
How do you work your jig?
What do you find to be the most productive tide?
What do you find to be the most productive moon?
" " """" water temp?
Do you run lights?
Boat or pier?
I will be most grateful for as much or as little as you are happy to pass on Sensei Loligo and would be happy to return the favor with finfishing advice and adventure.

Try doing it for 18 years straight, there is no best answer for any of those questions.
Boat or pier?.....is that a serious question? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
I'm all set in the advice dept., thanks.

Sorry BB, but I am the very best squidder there is around here, I am consistently better than any- any other boat. They give the charter boats $600 a day just to go be where the fish are, knowledge like mine is worth a lot more, it's invaluable. I have already told you fellas wayyy too much, but what the heck, I haven't told you much. You expected me to just tell you everything I know in one post, kinda presumptuous if ya ask me.
But we are talking squid and apparently recreational squid at that, so just go chase the other boats around and see what they are doing, no teacher like being there and doing it.

Loligo, actually although I asked many questions, I concluded by saying " I will be most grateful for as much or as little as you are happy to pass on."

Ok OK....heres the best advice I can ever give you and it's a dandy too-
Carry a toothbrush in your back pocket- to get the weeds of the hooks, <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/zorro.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' /> the slime grass is the worst and it's a pain to get off.

Buster Blues this is my very first post and with out a doubt the old used tooth brush works well to remove the green slime from the jig. If you use a little tooth paste they also will shine a little.
One way to have the squid jump on the jig is to make sure you are using florocarbon between jigs and if the squid are running on the smaller size, use smaller jigs. Sometimes multiple colors from pink, green, blue or even orange will get results.
Drop to the bottom with the lightest weight you can use and just feel them on while lifting very slowly.
Have some ice to keep them fresh or burlap bags that you can cover your totes with once they have been soaked in the salt water, drip dry works the best overall to keep them cold.

I'm not angry....more like greatly amused.
It has nothing to do with whats in my mind. That's a scary place.
People are lazy, they go on a board and ask folks how and where and expect the whole thing to be handed to them on a platter ( or in one post) there's ton's of info on jigging squid out there- most of it isn't on this site though ( no offense Glen), you just have to do a little looking and most of the answers are already there.
My "loligo" is something I've had as a name on many DB's since the mid 90's, I figured it was most appropriate here. I suppose "Mr. Loligo" is a form of flattery? I don't know.

Not lazy, just new. How else does anyone break into a sport? No one has to give up anything, but plenty of people are willing to help others out. If you're not, fine but keep in mind that is why people create sites like this. I'm willing to say that you're the best squid fisherman in the world if that's what you want to hear and if it will keep you quiet. Have a nice day.

Loligo, I'm sure your mind is a scary place; with the left brain always fighting with the right over which is smarter. You may be good, you may even be great but I doubt you'll ever be as good or great as you are arrogant.
Most of the people on here share, you're the first person I've ever met here that had a problem with sharing technique info. You remind me of my first Sensei, he was an arrogant SOB too.

Boy- now I definitely know why I didn't share....
Folks like you guys have all but run me out of business. Nothing attracts a crowd like a crowd.
I don't have any "special technique" really, I just know where they will be and when they will be there and I am very good at catching them very fast, very fast. I'm not all that great at catching them when they are thin or picky- thats not why I am there, to catch dinner- I'm there to catch someone else, several dozen someone else's dinner.
Arrogant? Noooope, but I am smart enough to know better than to tell some total stranger more than they need to know to go and get a few squid, any more than that and I am just shooting myself in the foot.
In just a few short years, we went from this being all I had to deal with:
To this:
I'm in no hurry to add to it...and this year there was three times that many boats, that was just as wide as my angle would go, theres lots more there in that second one.

Since people are asking, I will add a few points that I have heard from my east coast customers.
We have the largest selection of squid jigs available anywhere in the USA, everybody likes something different, so we manufacture a large selection of jigs from very tiny, to very large.
From my customers last year, they had said that the really small jigs (Size 1.0 "Micro-Prawn, Prawn SS 2008, and Pearl Prawn") worked very well when fishing was slow when they would get squid when others weren't. Some others really liked some of the weighted jigs, and would often use those on the bottom to weight down their jigs, often they only got squid on the bottom weighted jigs (about 1oz size "Tiny Teasers, Squid Bomb, Bullet Head, Rainbow Jigs, Squid Dart").
For technique, I like a fast jerk up about 2', and then lowering very slowly, the squid usually hit on the way down, or when the jig is motionless.
Hope that helps someone a little.
Jon

WOW.. this thread is a kick.. jus had to add a line..
I see loligo's point of view..
See what happen with OTW and sol.. the sea is only so big. but it aint big enough apparently.
My opinion.. jus be thankful with whatever you get.. why ask, if he gives he gives.
I like to share.. but i hate it when the arrogrant report chasers blow it up with nothing to contribute.
I also had it when people just take someone else hard work with no appreciation, consideration, and very often any care for the environment or stock.
safe to say.. this forum is great that people are getting together and sharing.. but it is growing and soon.. it'll have its bad eggs.. kinda like a town growing into a city.. people become distant to one another.
some of the larger forums are nuts.. i like this cause its small and specific. but yeah.. i dont know.. i see both points and please no name calling cause someone is being truthful
plus i can out fish anyone for squid =) j/k j/k j/k
