I went out on Frances Fleet- their first squid trip on Friday May 5. Had a great time and caught 63 squid- some up which were huge. It is a comfortable way to get out there squidding. Great service and restrooms and gallery on board. I considered going to Newport and dealing with the crowds but the boat was so much easier.



They went off one of the South Shore beaches.

They charge $35 for a trip running from 7pm to 1am. It was about a 30 min boat ride each way which left a good 5 hours of fishing time. Parking is free. They are located at Point Judith, RI.



You can buy food drinks (burgers were $3) right on the boat and there's restrooms and cabin with tables if you want to sit down for a bit.



They are running squid trips Friday/Saturday nights in May (I think until middle of June)- web site is linked below.

I hope to be using my own pole and reel but I am a little unsure what is best. I do mostly trout fishing and I would like to know if a light action rod with a spinning reel using 6lb test line will work. I would greatly appricate any suggestions on what tackel to use.

You might want a little heavier line just because the squid jigs are so expensive (don't want to lose any) and some of the squid were large. The smaller yo-zori jigs seem to work well- when I was on the boat green jigs seemed to produce well earlier then the pearl and pink jigs were working later on. You will probably need 2oz or 3oz sinkers due to the current. There have been times I needed 4-6oz so bring a couple of those in case. They have a tackle shop with fair prices right in the Frances Fleet office.



You dont need a lantern as the boat has lights all around.



I used a 7ft surfcasting rod with 17lb test with 3 jigs tied on above a 3oz sinker. Sometimes a had 2 large squid on at once that put a good bend on that rod- I'm pretty sure those double catches would have snapped 6lb test.

Check your regulations and see how many squid jigs you can use at one time. You can rig them together 16" aprat or so and add a weight to the bottom jig. Juicyjigs are made so you can connect jigs or weights to each jig. They wrok really well on teh fishing boats.



If you need to use much weight, you will need to use a heavier rod. I would use the lightest rod you can get buy with. The squid are not too shy so do not be afraid of using 15lb - 20lb test. I use 8lb fishing from piers in protected waters. I use the Juicy Jigger™ Squid Fishing rod which has a fast action tip. The squid are a different species than on the east coast and are smaller. A good sturdy, somewhat long rod would work well from a large boat.



Squid fishing is great fun and the rewards are mighty tasty <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup2.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':unsure:' />
