Hi Matt,

July/August might not be the best for squids but you will enjoy other kinds of fishing with a small boat...

For sure you'll have fun as long as you will be prepared (protection) for the strong sun rays... so take your hat and your creme and who knows... you might be lucky for "calamari" (squids in Greeks).

Fished for Calamari in Greece in July, 2010. Best to go out at night without a moon, or one that sets early. Get to your spot at around 10 pm local time, and fish till around 2 am or longer. Best if no tides or waves. Calamari strikes are sensative, and a rocking boat may feel like a strike.



Lures were Greek versions of the US lures, being pre-weighted (around 8 oz.).... most US lures I've seen have a loop on the end to add weight.



Location was in SE bottom end of Alonissos.



Water depth was 80m. Calamari were between 20-50m depth.



Used Greek method of fishing. NO rods/reels. 1 mm diam. mono wound around the long direction of a piece of wood shaped like a dog bone, tied directly to the lure. Boat had small lights hung over the port and stbd side of the boat, placed about 6 inches above the water surface. Using hand-line method, slowly move lure up and down.. if a strike occurs, start to rapidly bring line into the boat and it piles into the bottom of the boat. Once Calamari is into the boat dump it into a bucket. Don't pause while retrieving, or Calamari will jump the lure... constant pressure is required.



Two rigs were used... one with a small (2-inch) water activated strobe light, and one without. The lighted lure caught 2:1 over the unlighted lure.



4-hour result was around 40 Calamari in the 1/2-1 kg range. ..... tasted real nice coming off the grill!!

Hi, If you have any experience squid fishing in Greece then please tell us about it. Particularly, we would like to know in what regions squid fishing is popular in Greece. Also, what are "squid jigs" called in the Greek language? What type/species of squid do you catch in Greece?

Also, I think ΚΑΛΑΜΆΡΙ means "squid" in greek. Is that correct?

Also does ΨΆΡΕΜΑ mean fishing?

Hi Glen, just discovered your very interesting site.I live in Athens-Greece,but i have been fishing for squids more than 6 years,in a lot of islands of Greece(so i may be helpfull to friends that are coming to Greece) and of course around Athens.I fish from boat and not from shore,and i fish them all year with no stop at all and always in day time!Sometimes till the sunset but my basic fishing is during the day.Of course there are good  and bad periods during the year,but both are interesting.In good period you can catch 20-50 squids and in bad 4-6 but they are still enough to use them for live bait.My theory about squids or better kalamari is that they dont immigrate but they are moving to different but not far away areas,where you have to search for them and use a lot of imagination to attract them.About what you are asking about Greek manufactures of jigs you wont find something really interesting.Regards,Nick

Hello,everybody,im Greek and i come from an island called Skiathos (North Sporades) i own a charter fishing business and the highlight in our trips is the Calamari (squid) fishing when it gets dark,just for to know there is two different caint of Calamaris the wild ones(thrapsalo) ho live on deeper water in big groups and we fish them mostly in the summer,and the ones ho live close to the cost and we fish them in the winter,any information about fishing in Greece please let me know ill be very happy to help
