Fly Rods
#1
I have a 10-foot fly rod and i was wondering if it would work for squid. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' />

Should i leave the fly reel on or replace it with a spinner?

thx, PT man <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/us.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />

you can fly fish for squid but you will need a special fly. this was discussed previously here:

and here:

a 10 weight rod would be fine. it depends really how big the fly (and the squid are). i would not haul a big squid up using the rod...just grab the line and haul it onto the jetty or pier.

a fly rod will never be as good as a long surf rod since it is not really designed to haul up heavy things out of the water. hopefully you won't snap the rod! then again if the squid are small i guess it does not matter.

You can attach a normal spinning reel but there will (usually) be no rod butt to rest against you and so it may make reeling a bit difficult. then again some heavy saltwater fly rods DO have rod butts that extend beyond the reel seat. they would work a lot better.

hope that helps, cheers, glen <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':ink' />
