Cuttlefishes and Squids of the World
edited by Takashi Okutani. 32cm. Pp.253. Hardbound. GBP135.00 + postage.
Possibly the final edition of the author's life work on cephalopods. Describes and illustrates 408 species of cuttlefishes and squids from the world' s oceans, which may yield a total of about 450 species. In recent years, the exploitation of new resources may not have increased dramatically, but conservation, management, effective utilization of resources and exploration of the potential usefulness of animals particularly in pharmaceutical applications, have been emphasized. It is interesting to note the progression over the years : 'Useful Cuttlefishes and Squids of the World', 1975, in Japanese only, 60 species; 'Useful and Latent Cuttlefish and Squids of the World', 1980, 86 species; 'Cuttlefish and Squids of the World in Color', 1995, 220 species. The emphasis of this volume is to provide ready identification and is very well illustrated. Text in Japanese and English. Please note that this work is too recent in publication to have been cited by Jereb and Roper 'Cephalopods of the World Volume 1'.
