I have never gone out for squid before, but am very interested in trying this year. I will be on the cape this weekend (I'm from Boston) - my family has a house in Harwich. I'm guessing I'd benefit from another week or two weather wise but I've read there are still some out there.
My question is mainly on locations. Harwich is on the ocean side of the cape, near chatam, almost on the 'elbow'. I'm assuming you would want to fish in the ocean side at this point rather than on the bay side of the cape for increased success - should this matter? Also if anyone knows of any good locations to go and try I'd appreciate it, otherwise I'm just going to go out and find the longest pier I can and hope for the best.
Finally has anyone been out yet on the cape, and if so how'd you do?
Well I did go up to the cape, and we checked out a few spots including wynchmere harbor, chatam fish pier and various docks we could find.
I didn't see anything, from what I've read online it seems like you can actually see the squid in the water as you jig for them - is this true? In other words do you make a long cast out and jig just as for any other fish and hope for the best or are you wasting your time if you can't see any in the water right around the docks?
The water was very murky due to the recent nor'easter that hit but I could still see signs of life down there when I shined a flashlight off the docks. Lots of minnows and some worm type things so I assume its gotta be a matter of weeks before the fishing picks up.
Of course they could have been out there, but it was freezing and the water so discolored we just checked the spots out and headed home with the intent to hit them up again soon.
I prefer jigging straight up & down. I drop to bottom, retrieve 5 or 6 cranks, then jig. I think the larger squid are under the smaller ones. GOOD LUCK!

Just found out that the Helen H party boat is running squid trips out of Hyannis, this week and next week. Day trips as well as night trips. Has anyone been on this boat squidding?

hi am not from the area i didnt even know u can fish for squid in the cape i was wonder if u can give a place to go jig so i can map quest it thanks hope to hear from u ..

Looked last nite (Tues) at Wareham river, onset harbor, marion harbor saw no squid or ink on the decks. Fished at he end of the outgoing tide till just about slack. Still looking for a spot in my area (wareham) that will produce. I got 1 last year in marion harbor. They must come in around here someplace.

"On The Water Magazine" Fishing Forecast reported someone caught a bucket at "Stage Harbor". I guess it's near Chatam. I've never been there, but when I searched internet I came up with a photo of the area that looks pretty interesting.

May be worth a trip......Most of the regular spots have become over-crowded lately...

i agree newport is geting crazi you barley have hand space nevermind elbow if anyone hits this spot please post and let us know how it went
