Perth Western Australia
#1
Hi, just joined this forum after my interest being piqued by seeing someone catching squid while I was catching blue manna (swimmer/flower) crabs in the Swan River. [Glen, squid reports occasionally in www.hotbite.com.au for Perth, there's one for 5 April 2007]

One of my first fishing spots upon arrival in WA was the Busselton jetty which is 1.8km (over 1 mile) long. I was after bonito and using pilchards with a treble hook. No fish that day but something pulled on my line steadily. In bringing it in I say that a squid had grabbed hold of the bait but I couldn't hook it. Now, I had made up my own ganged hooks and the treble was attached via a snap on the last hook. So I added a couple more trebles and was able to hook up two squid and what squid they were. I weighed them at home and they came to about 1 kg (2lb) each.

There's plenty of squid around Perth but typically one needs a boat to get to the better spots. I was certainly surprised to note that there were squid in the river which makes it easy for me and also fills in the time while I wait to pull up my crab nets. Expecting the crabs to stop soon as there has been some rain and the fresh water will probably flush them out to sea. Biggest squid so far in the river has been 525gm not too bad. Ended up as a squid salad enjoyed totally by family.
