Squid Competition
#1
Glen: I saw you have squid competition on 2004. How's about hosting squid competition in New Port, RI ? <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> I think it would be fun. I think there are more users aware of this site now. I spread the words out for you <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' />

What do you think ?

Let us know if you ever want to see how squid fishing in New Port, RI is like. I still have an empty 'guest room' <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

Maybe this year, I'll try to take some movie clips so you can see how crazy the squid runs is.

I love Melbourne, AU, been there for a month back in '96, only visit, Melbourne and Canberra though.

Got to stop by Sydney next time if I have some free time to travel.

Glen, if come, I am sure you'll have fun fishing for our equavilance to mulloway rather than our squid.. I like australia squid fishing more so than the east coast fishing..

I find the tactics used in aussie squidding are far more enjoyable than east coast.. plus you guys get some big calamari.

Another thing to add.. the east coast squid is fun because when they run. they run. 400+ squid sometimes. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

1tym,

What's your equivilance to mulloway,.. sae bass?

I'd be keen Glen.

Glen, how about a Melbourne squid comp?

Flinders? Queenscliff? East PPB?

Boat and LB sections?

Up to 10 squid weighed per person.

Heavyest bag prize, and mystery weight?

Dave.

hi sfoxnh - thanks for the offer! much appreciated. also, any video clips would be great to see.

hi 1tym - wow! i can't imagine catching 400 squid in one session!

hi salmon-king - a melbourne squid competition sounds like a good idea but i know from past experience that we have struggled to even get a couple of guys together for a squid fishing trip in the melbourne area so i suspect a comp would be a massive failure. that was why i set up the fishing buddies section of the forum but it hasn't really been used. see here: http://www.squidfish.net/forums/index.php?showforum=53

Just imagine that the bridge is over 1000 feet (~300 meters) are shoulder to shoulder with people.

When squid runs, you will see everyone is pulling the squids up. Under the bridge there are hundreds of thousands of squids, just go back and forth.

The most frustration of squid fishing is that you see tons of them swimming around, but none of them bites ....

Hey guys. If you guys wanted to do a squid competition. I wouldnt mind. Although I am rarely on goat island now that I got a boat we can still do a competition. Like have a entry fee. If we get enough people the money that people use to enter. Can be the jackpot. Then we can put flyers out. I mean we could get something going

Sponsorship would be key for such a competition. Perhaps a local bate shop could be recruited. It would sure bolster their sells and help market the event.

Second, how would you prevent someone from cheating? Who would stop someone adding to someone else's bucket? I dont think there would enough judges to monitor everyone. From past expericences, Striper tourneys make you take a lie detector test.

Maybe limiting the amount of entries or designating a certian area would combat these issues.

Forgive me if I am taking this too seriously, as I am in the sales & marketing field.

I do think this is a terrific idea. However, I dont think the city of Newport would be too happy about it.

what happen to good old fashion trust?.. i guess it doesnt exist when money is involved or prizes..

In that case if you think cheating is a factor. Then we minus well. Just do teams! I call 1tym! LOL. But on a serious note. If you think cheating is a factor then I would say don't join. We all have a trust on here so if you confident your that good you should outfish 2 people! <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

We often do on-line competitions over here. We just finished the 1st Aorinpiad. Running over a 2 month period, there were 45 competitors. Despite being the off-season, 70kg of squid were entered.

Points were awarded on the weights of the 2 largest squid caught with an individual and teams event. Teams were randomly chosen and team points awarded on the average weight of the largest squid each member caught.

Entries were made by posting a dated picture of the squid with entry card and of the weight of the squid.

There is a large element of trust but as most of the prizes were donated by competitors there was no point in cheating.

Most of the on-line competitions over here remain on-line but on the last weekend 16 of us got together and got well pickled <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol' />

Soccerlife945,

You have misinterpreted my post. I do agree that a small competition among forum members would go off with little trouble. (and be super fun <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> ) However, I was focusing on a larger tournament. Currently there are many significant Striper, Blue, and other fish contest. Never have I seen a squid catching contest in this area.

Again "Forgive me if I am taking this too seriously", I was merely thinking on a larger scale. I believe with all the die-hard squid enthusiast in the region, such a tournament could be a great success. Maybe we could call it the "Newport Squid Derby". With good sponsorship and organization this idea has potential. I use to organize and run special events at my last job. I will say, I really miss it. That may be why this sounds super cool. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

egi zed,

I like your approach to a competition. Sounds like fun. I like the idea of a size contest versus a quantity one. What kind of prizes do you award? What area are you from?

Size is a good measure because you can't get people teaming up. You just have to make sure that the squid is dead and drained when you weigh it <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':th' /> The only problem with size on this site is that we have people fishing all over the world so whoever is in the Spring at competition will have a distinct advantage. Same can be said for Autumn if you go by numbers though.

Prizes are anything from egis and handmade yaen gaffs to bottles of sake or other local specialities.

I live in Nagoya so it was a 300k 6 hour drive down to Wakayama. Nothing compared to the 3 guys who drove down from Yamagata, 1100k and over 12 hours behind the wheel. Water temps are still a little low around the local squidding points so I have to wait a little longer for the local season to open. And then mayhem...
