Hey

Hey all!

I'm a student in my third year of university in Marine Biology, at the University of Guelph. Right now I'm working in a lab helping grad students with fish. My real passion is squid. Unfortunetly Guelph happens to be in the middle of Canada, completly landlocked. I really want to be able to do research on squid, but I have no access to them. It seems like a forum that is dedicated to fishing for squid might help.

See you around the message boards!

welcome to the forum,

you might also like to check out tonmo.com as they specialise in that sort of thing!

Hi Glen!

I've been looking around TONMO for a while now, and I think I'll ask them some questions. It just seems that this might be the best place to get info about actually catching squid, but the only way to figure it out is to try!

Thanks,

hi student, so where do you plan to catch the squid from, west or east coast?

Hey Glen!

Well, actually I'm hoping that you might be able to help me out with this one. I'm not totally sure which coast to go to. At first I was hoping to go to the west coast and find a fisherman there who could catch some Humboldt squid for me. Humboldt would be great to study because they have only shown up near BC in the past few years, so I would want to figure out what kind of an impact they might be having. But I read on TONMO that Humboldt squid in BC are very very rare and only a few have ever been caught...if this is true then I have to find another species. If there is no way to catch Humboldt near BC, then I have to go to the east coast. The east coast would be preferable, since it's a lot closer. The problem is that I have no idea what kind of squid are there, what time of year they get fished, or how I would go about finding a fisherman who would help me out.

If you have any advice, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Student

I think they get more humboldt squid in California!

As for the "little" squid, in the west, they seem to get some squid around Puget Sound and Seattle. And on the east coast, Rhode Island and Boston seem to be popular.
