haven't the regs gone up an inch each of the last 4/5 years....18" to 19" to 20" last year to 21" now??

whatev....maybe next year they'll close the season altogether.

the only thing to do is load up the fam on your respective boats and head out for the day... get through the shorts, get the kids hooked on fishing and enjoy the time with your fam

Summer flounder, Paralichthys dentatus. Tasty bastards but the regs go up every year.

Just a question though- why so much venom towards the commercial guys? They're barely allowed to land any at all in New England, even though there are TONS of them out there (lots of bycatch). Most of the ones that go overboard survive (the change in pressure isn't as bad on flatfish as it is on groundfish), although they are pretty stressed.

It seems like all of the commercial guys point fingers at the recreational guys for them not being able to land > 100 lb, and all the recreational guys think the commercial guys are killing them off and causing the high size limits. Neither is really accurate.

Just curious what your thoughts were.

The thing about commercial is also they are bound by quotas once they hit the preset quota there season is shut down so 100#’s per day 14 inch fish in the long run it doesn’t matter they are still shut down once max weight is caught.

From what I gather I attended the saltwater fishing license meeting on Wednesday night and according to the references that were made recreational went over by 78,000 pounds of what they wanted the limit to be. DEM was hoping the limits would be around 100,000 pounds by recreational given the restrictions they put forth.

The new regs are an adjustment to try to try to get down to where they think the stock needs to be. I realize this is a tough pill to swallow for a lot of folks I really love fluke fishing. But the same thing happened to Tautog regulations a few years ago and now this has been one of the best tog years I have seen in a long time. So sometimes strict regulations are better in the long run for the fish and us.

I've been talking to a couple of people at GI who fluke fish. They said DEM dropped the fluke size to 17inches, because a lot of people was complaining. But on the site it's still 21. Where they lying or did they change it?

I am going to go with they were lying. I will check in with my sources to confirm this but it seems 100% unlikely that DEM would lower there size limit. They are trying to build a ground fish stock up to a federal mandated level and with the overfishing they say happened last year there is no way they would lower the limit. Although this is the state of Rhode Island and people do things for no reason I am going to say that this is just wishful thinking.

Have you ever asked yourself how the heck the DEM knows how many fluke recreational fisherman take??? It is a farce!!! They have survey folks in the parking lots or occasionally on a head boat... They extrapolate the numbers from their survey which is very unrealible!!! The also assume a 10% discard of dead fluke. Or yet a better question to ask is how many pounds of fluke are caught in the draggers nets and they have to throw back dead because they already have their 100 pd limit.... An article in the fisher man two years ago quoted that 5,000 pds of fish on average are caught with only a 100 pd limit they are able to catch..that is very bad sht.... the draggers are still dragging right now...the commerical rod and reel guys are catching 14 inches upto 100 pds a day, but the recreational fisherman can not fish yet....it is having a dramatic effect on the head boats and the charter guys in RI.... If they DEM had accurate data, then that would be one thing, but it is not even close.... Per a number of the long time fisherman in RI, the fluke fishery has never been better.... and what about the dog fish which you could not commercially kill for the past few years...ever think what the effect of having dog fish in the area for the entire season that fluke are in our waters has done to the fluke population.! The regulations are just BS. On the bright side, RI fared a lot better than the sister states....

welcome to RI politics. it is what it is.

don't be 'that guy' and just disregard the regs because you think they are BS. we all think they are BS but what can you do...?

I have no intention of disregarding the regulations. I am just sitting home, tying my fluke rigs in anticipation of openning day. The general public should know how the information regarding the amount of fish is captured. I no longer respond to the DEM surveys and encourage others to do the same. I also know of folks who think it is 'ok' to lie about the number of fish that they caught and they brag about the size and number of fish that they caught. They have no idea that the data will be used in defining fishing limits. What idiots!

Only 11 more days till it is fluke season. Gonna try to get more squid tonight so I will have bait for fluke season! THINK SQUID
