Jigs Under A Float?

Hi All,



I am wondering if anyone has used squid jigs under a float instead of a usual baited jig? I normally only use shrimp style jigs with a cast and retrieve method and find this great, but I like the idea of having a float set up as well but am not a fan of using real bait if I can get away with it.



Any advice appreciated,

i actually love squiding with a float when conditions are good for it, if theres a bit of chop the jig will move about a bit and look alright, i normally only use a float when im fishing off a rock wall or something and i wanna keep my jig outta the weed

Hi rob, how long is your leader beneath the float and how deep do you you fish? does it work well in both day and night for you? i normal fish in the afternoon/early evening, cast and retrieve the jig. but i noticed that many people like to use jig underneath float at night. i've never seen people caught squids using this method, but i am sure it works for some people and i might have left too early to see the catch.

mate it all depends where your fishing i normally like to have it so the jig is about a metre of the weed, it doesnt really work unless there is about of swell or chop about

if its dead calm your jig will just sit still in the water and look stupid!



i generally only fish at night.

I was pretty sure that some people use a jig under a float instead of a baited jig at times. I have only ever noticed the long polers or hand line lads using baited jigs w floats . I figured why not cast out a float w a jig and still flick around with my other jig. 2 snares and hopfully more squid.



I am thinking of trying Flinders pier on Friday, never been there before so will give it s shot then.

you can only try mate,

flinders should be good fri, high tide 6 26 pm,

if your using smaller jigs (2.0) try at the second light from the start of the pier

cast on the right hand side theres a nice patch of weed there, i generally dont

go past that light when i fish flinders, there are some thumping big squid out the end but you need to be set up well

for that , long nets ect..

Thanks for the location tip Rob. Now that is valuable info for a new location first timer. <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/xyxthumbs.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' /> The long drop to the 'thumpers' (heres hoping) should not be a prob, I use a net on a rope for the long drops. If I hook up I will post a report.

So, I got to finders bout 10am, run out tide. Set up me floats, also flicking every color and size jig I have all over the pier from the end to Robs mark. Nothing. Gave up at 3pm. Admittedly my timing was prob not that good, run out tide milking up the water clarity. But it looks like a squid ground for sure, lots of weed patches. I definitely will go back at night on an incoming tide.



One guy turned up and landed about 8 whiting (that I saw) in about and hour. He gave me his bait as he left and it was garden worms!!! I only carried jigs with me today so it was no use regrettably.



Might go back next week.

thanks for the report nala, shame about no squid, but ive never caught squid landbased during the day so maybe wrong times?

who knows, squid are a weird creature.



personally i like the water a bit murky where i squid, (sorrento) whenever its clear i never do any good,

how far up and which side of the pier was the bloke catching whiting, im keen to get on them, its tthe only fish i target

when i get the boat out

I am fairly new to squiding (12 months) so I am learning a lot about the creature, but the best day I have had so far is 18 squid between 3 guys at Portsea pier, clear water, low tide, slight chop, 10am. It was definitely a school that moved through when we got lucky, it went nuts for 40 mins then nothing. So I kinda think that they either are around and feeding or they are not...not sure. I did see one come up to the surface and look at my float though. Bugger.



The guy that got the whiting... if you go to the end of flinders pier, walk to the right (where there is no railing), do a 180 and face the shore, over looking the section that looks like a platform has been removed and is baricaded off. He stood at this point and droppped his rig straight down, and was on in about 3 minutes. I was fuming I had no hooks with me but good on him.

Were they King George whiting or just regular sand whiting? Wouldn't mind a crack but the drive is abit far <img src='http://www.squidfish.net/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':zorro:' />



oh yeh, I've used baited jigs under a float at Portsea and it's worked out very well

I dont think that they were, King George, they were slightly brown in color, definitely whiting though.
